Hey all,

So long story short we have a 120 000l marblelite pool. It had already been drained for the last two years with the thought of renovating it but going the fibre glass route. BUT, I'm torn between renovation or closing it up. This thread is particularly for those who have been in the same position as I am in. Please share your thoughts on which route you would go especially if you went the one route and actually should have gone the other.

You can even mention things along the lines of pools either do or don't increase the value of a property cause I'm not entirely sure what's the case here either. Thanks all!
 
I don't have the luxury of a pool. But I have a whole bunch of friends who closed up their pools and very happy they did it. I also saw some people looking for properties stating they do not want a pool.

In the current economic climate I guess people realise it is not such a luxury anymore and just a pain in the back side. Never mind the cost of maintenance. With the water issues and lack of electricity it just adds another stress to life.
 
I would suggest closing it up, it is an unnecessary expense. As far as the value of your property goes the added expense of owning a pool would offset any inherent value.

Disclaimer: I might be biased because I just got fed up having to clean the pool at home or listening to my parents complain about the cost. :ROFL:
 
Relative reduced pool to Âą/Âł it's original size. The rest of it was turned into an underground water tank with a deck over it.
So now they have a small, less maintenance pool, and something like a 50 000L water tank for the garden during summer.

Just back from an hour of badminton, jumped into my 21000 lt portypool and feel like a star.......
on work days, I come home hop into the porty, wash off the entire day and it feels great...
I have even braai'd whilst sitting in my pool.....

So Ja! :cool:
 
Pools are too much work and money for just four or five months max of use per year. Rather use a public pool in summer. As you soak in the piss of strangers, you can console yourself with thoughts of all the money you saved.

Double benefit of public pool use is that you can find a big one and swim proper laps.

Or you can go swim at Bishops. You'll get more than just a swim.....
 
My pool installed in 1990 and on its last legs. Leaks, tatty paving. I want to fill it in but wife says no, even though we cannot use it

Had quotes ranging from R55k to R110k to sort it out. Appointed two contractors to come and fix it. One was here two days with 6 guys, made a big mess, then disappeared. The second did not turn up.

Becoming a bit of a nightmare.
 
honestly if you are undecided then meet in the middle and just reduce the size of it by a good margin, say down to like 30 000Lt

My thoughts: A small pool 30 to 50 thousand litres is still an asset so I bought with a pool. A neighbour in our HOA just added one so it is still a desirable asset to some. Of course there's more to a pool that just swimming. The serenity of looking out at a sparkling clean pool. Pleasant to braai at the pool. And so forth. Personally I wouldn't buy a house with a 120,000l pool. Depends on the area of course so I assume it's not a high income area so it will surely be viewed as a negative at that large size.

That said am still looking forward to having no pool and no garden, instead using public parks in Europe in a simpler more minimalist lifestyle - not keen on any public pools and see no major need.

No no..make her organize the contractors and the project.
Make her stay at home and deal with it all.
Make her pay for it.

And IF/WHEN the pool is in, make her clean it, maintain it, manage the pump and the Kreepy and the pipes and the chemicals etc etc...

This should be the whole content of the argument/discussion.

Explain how that will work exactly...in practice?

they build a structural wall in the pool or fill it and put a new shell in, really it isnt hard to understand, either use part of the existing pool or build a new pool in the existing hole. it will still be less than him fibreglassing such a mammoth pool. he would be looking at 80-100k to reline that pool as is.

Ag sorry buddy, didn't realize you have been a pool contractor all your life, instead of just doing some guesswork here on a forum. My bad...

lol are you ok bro? I thought I was an angry person till I keep seeing your posts everywhere and realised maybe I am actually not that bad. It will get better buddy keep smiling.
