So for the last few summers, The Moose would hang four of these gadgets at the four corners of the MooseMansion estate.

He was always mightly proud of himself to see how those stupid bastards got themselves trapped ..... "Silly Idiots!", he thought to himself,

As the summer progressed the traps became full, the rotting stench of decomposing flies would permeate those forgotten corners of the estate.....

To the Moose, there seemed to be less flies around the braai, but was he fooling himself....?

Many of the Moose's drunken mates would go on to tell him, that even though he had captured 10 034 flies in a month (Yes! one drunken night we thought it would be fun to count them!") , he was only compounding the problem by in fact attracting more flies to partake in his drunken cullinary antics.

Do you think they have a point? Should I not put up the traps this year?

Nah.. put them up..

You have a number to try and beat this time around.

What you need is an extensive set of empirical data before you can make a decision. For the next three years, note each fly siting by date, time, location, and species. Then for three years after that, hang the traps and do the same. Also collect temperature and rainfall data for the entire period to be able to account for those variables. Finally, make every effort to ensure that your family's behaviour with regard to garbage disposal, food handling etc remains consistent through this time. At the end of this exercise, you'll have the answer.

the best answer so far,

If only i could find a miniature stethoscope then my drunk pals and I could also listen and record the wee flying beasts heart rates.... this could be of importance!

lol when i moved into my house, there were so many flies in the yard, Im talking about those big blue ones (we live near horses).I found they were attracted to a certain weed in my garden so i uprooted those and then just left inverted coke bottles with some beer in it.Caught about 100 in a day.Decimated the population actually.

On a serious note, I need an answer, are fly traps encouraging more flies or do they keep them under control?

It worked for me.Do you think the number of traps plays a part? I only had one in my garden.

My mates reckon the more that I put up, the more I attract, and yes, they do work, thousands of them, their theory being if I put up no flytraps I shall have less flies and the flies would spread their love to the neighbours.....
