The cost of operating Gauteng’s toll roads may be as high as R14 billion and not the R6.2 billion the roads agency said it would cost

The Star reports that the cost of upgrading the roads is estimated at R17,5bn, saying the inflated operational costs were contained in a confidential report anonymously sent to the newspaper.

The report was dated April 2011 and discussed, in detail, the operation progress report on Gauteng open road tolling.

The SA National Roads Agency Ltd (Sanral) has denied the tolls would cost this much and said the tender to build and operate the toll roads was R6.2bn over eight years.

However, in the report, Sanral indicated that the R6.2bn did not include VAT and that there were additional costs

I could have told you that there were going to be massive cost overruns two years ago.
They put up a sign at the Reading Interchange that the work would be completed by November 2010.
There was no way in Hell it was going to be ready by then, and it is still not finished.

Now what I want to know is... why is SANRAL still paying these contractors when they obviously have gone way over their estimated work period.
These contractors should be paying massive penalties instead of SANRAL giving them blank cheques.

And so much money is being wasted on sections of roads being tarred and then torn up again.
That R24 and N12 highway from Eastgate to the airport and to Boksburg must have been re-tarred and graded up again over 100 times now.

Somebody needs to investigate this and those SANRAL execs must be held accountable.

Saw yesterday that the R21 - R24 split was torn up again.
Wonder why?
 
So- they charge you a toll, so they can afford to operate the toll booth? :wtf:
