Tom Mainelli is the tablet technology research director at International Data Corporation (IDC).

Tom Mainelli has covered the technology industry since 1995. He manages IDC's Tablet program, and contributes to the Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker. In this role, he works closely with company representatives, industry contacts, and other IDC analysts around the world to provide in-depth insight and analysis on media tablets, ereaders, portable media players, and other mobile connected devices. He also closely covers the services that power these devices, as well as the worldwide market for mobile entertainment content, including video, digital books, and music.

Prior to taking over the Mobile Connected Devices program, Mr. Mainelli covered PCs, thin clients, and displays as an analyst in IDC's Clients and Displays group. He played a key role in the launch of IDC's Worldwide PC Monitor and Worldwide Enterprise Client Trackers, and for three years he managed the fielding and analysis of IDC's influential Consumer and Commercial PC Buyers Surveys. Previously focused solely on the United States, he expanded the scope of these annual surveys to include countries from all the major regions, offering a truly global perspective on the purchasing habits of both home and corporate PC buyers.

Prior to joining IDC, Mr. Mainelli covered the technology industry as a journalist, first as a writer and editor for Smart Computing magazine, and most recently at PC World where he served as a senior editor. At PC World, he worked first in the news department, covering breaking news and writing daily stories for the Web site. Later he transitioned to the reviews department, where he worked closely with the PC World Test Center to create a rating system for new product reviews. During his seven-year tenure at PC World, Mainelli garnered numerous honors including the 2004 ASPBE National Silver Award for Best Web Commentary for his popular GeekTech column.

Mr. Mainelli holds a bachelor of journalism degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
