A guy I know has a tomtom one XLS and he has a tomtom go 720. The 720 has the SA maps but the XLS was bought overseas and now he wants to put the SA maps on the XLs but it does not work, when trying to load up, after copying the files across, it says this map cannot be used.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Yes, like all GPS suppliers, the rule is one device one licence. You can't transfer maps between devices without a licence for that specific device.

Solution: buy the SA maps off the TomTom website. Use the Netherlands country setting. 49 Euros.

(Of course you know that using a hacked or codegen'd mapset is stealing)

I'll be selling my Nuvi 710 when the TomTom GO920 launches next week.

So is TomTom really better than Garmin? I do not like the Garmin that much, has done some pretty crappy things in the time I have used it including wanting me to drive off the side of mountains and bridges on numerous occasions, I think that lady inside the Nuvi wants me offed. It also tells me to turn into roads that do not even exist and yes .... I do have the latest maps which seem worse than the older maps I had.

Garmin have been around here in SA for yonks and consequently everyone knows or has heard of them. TomTom is a relative newcomer to SA, lack of support, blah blah... Just go to Europe, however, and you will see TomTom is huge over there, more popular than Garmin. True a lot of it is because in their real time traffic data systems over there, but personally I prefer TomTom.

Do your homework, however. A peek at the SA TomTom site says that the Go720 in the top of range available here. A quick dig reveals its last years model, which is been replaced in Europe with the 930, and not available here. Software update is the only significant change, which adds voice commands, not available in the 920. Why sell the old 920 only here? Excess stock.....

TomTom is the biggest seller in Europe.... it outsells Garmin and Navman combined.
Garmin is the third biggest seller with about 20% of the market share.

Cool, thanks for the feedback I will certainly have a good look at one before buying and also wait a bit for the latest model before buying.
