Tonsils-why do we have them?

current thinking is not to remove. treat with antibiotics until infection clears. why destroy your first line of defence anyway?

no i didn't. i still stick by my initial post. I'm trying to figure out which way you're inclined (tonsillectomy wise that is):)

ok, our dr says they generally don't remove them. they are supposed to swell up and only in severe cases will he consider removing them. severe meaning-swollen to a very large extent or continuously being swollen.

Okay, thats pretty hard to pick up cause you asked me... You seem confused.

i still stick by my initial post.

You do that! Amandla!

My opinion is pretty well expressed in post number 11... which words did you have difficulty understanding in that post?

from my own "bad" experience with tonsillitis as a kid - If they give u trouble - get rid of them asap!! mine had gone rotten and had been poisoning my body causing bad health.
eg. I was always tired no matter how much I slept! I was always hungry no matter how much I eat! It also caused me some hearing loss! and stunted my growth! once the rotten tonsils had been removed my body recovered, I gained weight and grew taller, except the hearing!

however I never looked back and I am healthier than most people WITH tonsils so getting rid of them was the best thing to have happened!

23, Still have tonsils, wisdom teeth and appendix. For someone who isn't an expert on human physiology, my ethos is pretty much "if it's not causing problems, don't remove it."

Little brother had his removed at 17, the middle one had problems when he was a kid, but I have never had issues with them. Maybe if I removed mine just for the fun of it, I would have a tougher immune system. The current one is pretty good, but it could have been more refined

I have had tonsilitis so many times that my tonsils have never returned to their orginal size. They are always slightly swollen, although they arent infected.
I use to get tonsilitis easily 2-3 times a year in my early and mid teens, but things have improved and I have had it once in the past 2/3 years. And other than that I havent really been sick.
So far I dont really regret not having them out, especially if it is part of my immune system.

Still have mine but as a kid they gave me lots of crap, fine now.
