I live in Northwold, close to Banbury Crossing, on the Sharonlea side of Golden Harvest Part. I can only get a 384kb/s (not even that) as the nearest Telkom exchange is in Randpark Ridge and that is 6km away. It seems a bit ridiculous to me, and the only answer i can get from Telkom is "That's just the way it is". I could understand it if I was in a rural area, but surely Telkom can do better than that...the nearest exchange is 6km away? I wish I could get some answer from Telkom about this...surely there are enough Telkom subscribers in this area to warrant a new exchange?

I live in Northwold, very close to Banbury Cross, just across the road from the Dome, I upgraded my line to 4mb. But have been having trouble with the line. Maybe I'm also to far away. Although, on the weekend, the line was fine.

What exchange are u on? i phoned my ISP who tested my line and he said he was surprised I got ADSL at all.....

You say 6km, is that how the crow flies or is that the line length? 6km walking distance from an exchange could be 12km of cable length.

But from the research I've done on mini-DSLAMs (these are not housed in traditional big exchanges as such but closer to your home), they are very cheap to install and are can be done at any Telkom blue box on your street corner. From what I understand, this is how ADSL2+lines are deployed.

I also would be interested in how to get a mini dsllam installed by Telkom. My distance to the exchange is 4.2 Km and in the beginning I had speeds
of 3 to 3.5 Mb but now only .8 Mb so the copper has gone worst. But pay for a 4 Mb line.

Good luck with that, there is a mini DSLAM 300m away from me that is stable at 4mb and even higher and Telkom will not help me.
I have tried to speak to some really high up guys there and no one wants to help.
I am not even stable at 1mb
When the consumer protection act comes into play, I will be the first one there to complain.

Same here, the cable running from the pole next to my house to the street (50m) is damaged, only have 384 now

Haha

Sounds familiar... upgraded my line to 4mb, and then had to downgrade a week later due to distance from exchange.
Best I can get is 512.
Incidentally, I think I am also using the randpark ridge exchange.

so it sounds like so many people can't get whats on offer...you know, it's quite sad because Telkom and ISP's are missing out on a lot of revenue due to Telkom's unwillingness to provide top notch service.

I see this thread was alive in 2010...

Any news on the topic?

Recently moved to northwold and also experiencing the same problems...

Wish they added THIS to the property listing....

Xander

Still sucks here in Northwold excess....on 384 line and IS is currently sucking, which they often do....so its all crawling speed here.
