The US environmental group, Blacksmith Institute, have compiled a list of the ten most polluted cities in the world with India, Russia and China featuring prominently.

The top ten cities or towns are:

1. Sumgayit, Azerbaijan; Potentially 275,000 affected
2. Linfen, China; Potentially 3m affected
3. Tianying, China; Potentially 140,000 affected
4. Sukinda, India; Potentially 2.6m affected
5. Vapi, India; Potentially 71,000 affected
6. La Oroya, Peru; Potentially 35,000 affected
7. Dzerzhinsk, Russia; Potentially 300,000 affected
8. Norilsk, Russia; Potentially 134,000 affected
9. Chernobyl, Ukraine; Potentially 5.5m affected
10. Kabwe, Zambia; Potentially 255,000 affected

The only African city to make an appearance is Zambia’s second largest city, Kabwe, which was the location of a thriving lead mining industry. These mines were allowed to run without the necessary health controls and there are reports that thousands of people inhabiting this region have been poisoned (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/3241037.stm).

But solving the pollution problems in many of these regions is not an insurmountable task.
The Blacksmith Institute’s director, Richard Fuller, said to the BBC: “The fact of the matter is that children are sick and dying in these polluted places, and it’s not rocket science to fix them.
