Top 5 telecoms skills in demand

*cough* <-. I sure as hell wish those same recruiters in the Western Cape would see a bored GSM (lol, W-CDMA plz) & Telecomms-focused electronic engineer posting on mybb while he is supposed to be doing academic research :p *hint hint*

These articles and stats are nice, but getting a job as a very qualified professional in these top 5 categories is not as easy as you think. Even with my extensive list of certs and experience people still come with unreasonable packages or try to get you to do low level support... but now I'm just starting to wonder weather its just my recruitment representative not being very good :-)

That sounds a bit hectic for Networking.

If you think you're going to get a job in a planning position at a GSM telecommunications company with a MCSE or A+ certificate, thin again. It's true that you can get ANY position at ANY company these days simply based on your skin color (or should I say, select color), but in the perfect World where actual intelligence counts you'd need some sort of degree like a BsC IT just to get you noticed - to get onto the shortlist you need EXPERIENCE with GSM technologies and networks. That, sadly, is something that no amount of pigment can give you - but that doesn't stop companies from hiring the wrong people though.

In the GSM World, having a degree or diploma is simply a formality. Experience is what counts here - but again, after the degree or diploma. Telecoms networks are not as simple as connecting your friends laptop to a router in your dormitory. It's a bit more involved than that.
 
Exactly :P Thats why i'm doing dev work in telecoms :P and soon financial too while doing a MSc.

btw Network Planning and Admin.. lol. I think you guys need to realise it depends on which network provider you work for ;) Jobs sometimes involves a LOT of admin, responsibility and oversight of vendors rather than actually getting in there and doing stuff. So e.g. if you like me and want to actually do stuff yourself, don't bother with telecom operator unless its for POC kind of work or non-specific vendor things because it often gets outsourced.

i.e. you end up handling customer complaints of coverage and fine tuning the coverage via investigation. then new sites are like checking where its going to be, finding a high site, checking freq allocations, codes, making sure hand overs works etc So a lot of project management too.. but again no real eng work :(

Vendors these days do most of the actual deployment of equipment to the site and configuring.. but again its more a connect and configure from what i understand. Sometimes the telecom operator doesn't have an established planning section for the tech deployed so then you will more input on design etc.. so yah.. not all its ramped up to be sadly. hehe.
