Been followed by a strange car with blue lights? It could be filled with crooked cops - and the police commissioner has told us what to tell you to do... DON'T STOP!

Johannesburg - National police commissioner Riah Phiyega is concerned by the number of robberies in Gauteng committed by people wearing police uniform or using cars with blue lights.

Phiyega said in a statement: "250 dockets are being followed up. These robberies, the way they are done in particular, is of huge concern for me and I have set up a multi-disciplinary team comprising detectives, visible [uniform] policing and crime intelligence, as well as a retired detective."

The team will be led by divisional commissioner of detectives Lt-Gen Vineshkumar Moonoo.

Phiyega said the crimes had resurfaced in the province over recent months with instances of businesspeople being robbed on their way to or from the bank and people being followed and then robbed while travelling from OR Tambo airport. Investigations established that some groups colluded with hotel staff, metered taxi drivers, and, in certain cases, police.

"The role of police officers is found to be either direct physical involvement or the supply of items such as uniforms, blue lights or firearms," she said. "Over the past couple of weeks detectives have been interacting with victims and further analysing the cases to get a better understanding of the crimininals' operations as well as the people possibly involved.

"Indications so far are that these crimes are opportunistic."

The police urged people who were stopped by a private car fitted with blue lights to slow down and continue driving to a well-lit area or to the nearest police station.

Stop = maybe get shot.

Don't stop = maybe get shot.

Is there any better indication of what state our country is in if even the Commissioner of Police tell you not to stop for blue lights?

In another year or three they will advise us which firearms we should buy to protect ourselves against the police......

I'm not a negative person but this is getting to much....

*wanders off going to look for some happy pills*

In Africa you don't stop for blue lights!! But in Joburg you must!!

Ok Riah, we will follow your advice.

Who do the medical and legal bills get sent to when we all get shot at for not giving way to the thugs?

In Feb 2006, whilst driving my work bakkie on the R300 south near Kuils River at 4.30 in the afternoon, this blue-light brigade came up behind me. I was already doing 130km and they approached fast. He put his headlamps on full, about a metre behind me. I pulled behind the first car gap on the left, and his Audi A8 touched my vehicle as he sped past. The repairs came to just over R 9000 so I approached Council, since it was the mayor's entourage. They did not answer correspondence for 10 months so I eventually phoned them and said I was issuing summons. The next day I had a call from the legal dept who told me they were willing to settle provided I signed this waiver absolving them from any blame or consequence, now or in the future.

I signed and the money arrived in my account the next week.

South Africa, the land of twisted ironies and explicit paradoxes.

Take the ANC for example ...

That is despicable behaviour on the municipalities part in my opinion...

Granted it was just R9000.. but I would have been tempted to make something of it personally, but I'm massively gatvol of these blue light brigades.

Easy to say from behind her cosy desk, but I was virtually run off the road and threatened with arrest and jail time, for failing to stop en-route to a police station. Their lullaby - "can't you see the blue lights and that we're wearing uniforms? You must respect our authority and pull over immediately".

Go to the police station to lodge a complaint - "you must understand that our officers are always under stress. They don't have time to second-guess a suspect so they act immediately"

This is the level of intellect that we're dealing with. Power hungry illiterates.

I was under the impression that these blue light brigades was illegal in the WC

Only allowed for police, prison and emergency personnel in the course of their duties and VIP protection services transporting the president and visiting heads of state.

Yes but I missed the 2006 part in the post. Back then it was still fair game

How easy do these criminals get there hands on uniforms? back up 20 to 30 years and a police officer could've gone to jail for even throwing his old uniform away.
It seems nowadays it's so easy, it's like they're issuing the criminals with uniforms and pistols.

I still see them around. They came through Adderley Street yesterday afternoon at around 16:00. There was this huge black truck truck in the convoy.

I wonder what that was about?
