Top cop Byleveld gets promotion
Thu, 27 Sep 2007
Top detective Piet Byleveld was called to police head office in Pretoria on Thursday to be surprised with a promotion to the rank of director.
"For once Byleveld did not have a clue about what was to happen when he was called to head office in Pretoria under the guise of briefing top management on recent serial killings.
"He was taken completely by surprise," police spokesperson Director Sally de Beer said in a statement.
Byleveld was promoted to rank of director with effect from the first of next month.
Under normal circumstances police posts are advertised within the service and members have to apply to be promoted to the next rank.
In Byleveld's case the promotion was done by police management without him applying.
"Piet Byleveld has rendered exceptional service to the SA Police Service and in turn top management fully supported by the Minister of Safety and Security decided to take the exceptional step of appointing him to serve at a higher level," De Beer said.
"I am just an ordinary policeman and an ordinary detective. I have always been proud to be a member of the SAPS and I am honoured to have been appointed director," Byleveld said.
He is renowned for his detective work, which includes the investigations that led to the convictions of the Nasrec serial killer, the Wemmerpan serial killer, the Bruma Lake murderers, and the conviction of Donovan Moodley in the Leigh Matthews murder case.
