Hi Guys

In the market to buy a washing machine, but clueless on what to buy.
We need a top loader washing machine.
Must be able to:
Wash duvets (what size do you recommend)
Fully automated
Only for 2 people
Which brand (Speed queen, Whirlpool, Samsung, LG, Defy)
Should i buy new or second hand?
Price range of up to R2000 (will that suffice)

Your comments will help so much

:confused::confused::confused:

Your speed queen and Whirlpool machines tend to be more heavy duty. We owned both brands and my mother loved. Never gave a single problem...we sold them when moving to NZ and that was after about 6 years of good service and they were still working 110%. Mom used to wash blankets and all kinds of other heavy materials in them.

The Samsung and LG toploades now that looks like its got a spaceship button panel and it sings you mary had a little lamb when its done strikes me as a bit finicky. They just look like they could break should you leave a coin in your jean pocket :-) But for two people like yourselves it will most likely do.

how many kg then to wash duvets?

You talking about just the covers or the actual inner aswell? I think our Speedqueen was a something like a 7kg...could have been more though....cant remember now...and that handled a blanket with ease. My mom only washed one at a time though. I think putting in two blankets would have been looking for trouble :-)

If you are able financially...i would say try and go for a new one. You get the warranty ....and with second hand...god only knows how that machine has been treated.

Where and at what price can i buy 1 at a really good price.
looked on gumtree and saw a few nice 2nd ones at good prices though

Reviews for the speedqueen

what do you like about this product?
This is without a doubt the "Toyota" of washing machines. It just keeps working and working! Had it since 1992 and it has never skipped a beat. It might be more expensive but the extra money is well spent. I think you could keep this washing machine going

what don’t you like about this product?
Nothing.

This is a marvellous machine. I have had my Speed Queen washing machine since 1987 and have had no trouble with it. It has done many, many hours of heavy duty work.

http://www.makro.co.za/p/3335/whirlpool-11kg-top-load-washer---1xdimensions--h-910-w--680-d--650/ - this one seems more economically viable perhaps?

Agree. Also second hand ones go for too much.

Washing machine technology has improved drastically the last decade and continues so each year. I would rather buy an entry level known brand new today than a top end model from even 5yrs back.

I use to work in the furniture trade 7yrs back and what was considered bleeding edge back then is now common features on all. Also do not overlook your washing powder and please understand that hot water washing powder only dissolves at > 36C. Anything cooler than that and the enzymes cause a black smudge on the drum and your clothes. Many sales guys would bullcrap you on saying that model X will never do it but model Y always does.

Always better to use cold water washing powder as you use less electricity and you get the same results.

dude is there any speed queens under 4K

as i said, its only for 2 people.
is there maybe a samsung in the range of 2.5K-4K

Don't like the speed queens anymore. My Dad had one he bought 10yrs back. Awesome as you can wash your car in it its so big. My Dad had to buy a Samsung top loader 3yrs back (his Speed Queen was in storage) and the el-chepo Samsung outperformed his Speed Queen.

Go to Tafelberg Meubels and check out the range. Also go to House & Home and once you have your quotes, use them to negotiate better deals. I take it your paying cash? If so, you can knock off a couple hundred rands off floor prices then.

I just did that with my new stove, paying R2K less as I payed cash immediately.
