Top Private Schools

Still on the topic of raising kids, are (any of) these honestly worth the price tag? What do they teach that the other less expensive private schools don't? :)

The top 10 overall best-performing schools are:

  1. Roedean – all-girls
  2. King David Linksfield – co-educational
  3. St Cyprian’s School – all-girls
  4. Somerset College – co-educational
  5. Durban Girls’ College – all-girls
  6. Herzlia High School – co-educational
  7. SAHETI – co-educational
  8. St Mary’s Waverly – all-girls
  9. Crawford College Sandton – co-educational
  10. St Andrew’s Senderwood – all-girls
Schools depend completely on the Headmaster and teacher. You can have amazing government schools that are well lead with great headmasters and amazing teachers, then you can have private schools where kids are treated no more than a business item. So it depends on the teachers etc.

Some of these schools are great but honestly I would consider the German School in Cape Town, but then German Univ is free if they can.

Or a good Model C School. ie SACS, Wynberg, Westerford, Rondebosch, Rustenberg (yet lately a lot of snobs from here). Clearly they havent met Reddam parents which would firmly ground them.

Settlers in Cape Town is also good from what I heard. Bishops however I would avoid. I have only ever met 1 normal kid that went to Bishops, the rest are spoiled brats into adulthood that was raised with endless psychiatric sessions etc. To put it into perspective we once helped a charity and we had Bishops parents and Rondebosch and SACS parents. We had to clear a bit of a stream from Rubbish etc. All the parents came other than the Bishops parents. Nope they sent their gardeners instead, who after 20 minutes decided to go home was better than do community work.

Sorry not to derail or hijack but just some advice on the fees situation that's really grinding my gears.
So I don't pay Termly or Annualy but they let us break the payments into 10 installments which they then charge me a 10% on monthly.
I was wondering if this is even legal

Pinnacle College Founders Hill | School in Modderfontein

Wow - this school is a JOKE
https://www.pinnaclecolleges.co.za/founders-hill
Appointed a teacher previously dismissed from another school from serious misconduct
  • School Fees ridiculous increase for 2025
  • Bullying - several incidents where the aggressor is supported as opposed the victims. Multiple students have left and we are in the process of leaving
  • Young teachers appointed at low cost to the school that leave soon after
  • Every incident is "isolated" to avoid trends being developed to see the true result
  • No sporting pedigree or even matric results to brag about
  • Significant investment needs to be made by parents on external tuition, sporting lessons
  • Principal was dismissed today so not sure if this is out of desperation or a turning point
  • Inaccurate textbooks that are paid for separately
  • No digital books which was promised at open day 6 years ago
  • No organisation capability for excursions, sporting events, even daily traffic
  • The only thing that they PUSH is the unnecessary BUZZ concert to showcase and fool people into signing - not even a well arranged video recording for parents
Please do your own research before making a decision you may regret

In 2025, homophobic incident observed at this school - Advtech Pinnacle College Founders Hill in Greenstone Hill

A child used graffiti on school property to write slurs on another child

After the parents complained to the school, nothing happened... The same child who did wrong was subsequently appointed as a prefect due to privilege

The new principal only starts in April 2025 and there is still no head of sport. Teachers resigned and Locums appointed without informing the parents until children notified their parents that they had no teacher at the start of the school year for certain subjects.

They have increased their fees by double digits which excludes compulsory school books and stationary - corruption of the highest order.

Matric results for 2024 were average

If you enjoy spending time with your kids, then send them to any cheap school but also make sure that you teach them university level maths and English. Save the extra that you would’ve paid in school fees and invest it for them.

If you don’t enjoy spending time with your kid (and be honest with yourself here), send them to private school and hope the teachers raise them into something decent.

The golden rule with children: if you don’t have the time for them, throw money at the problem.

This.

I shipped off all of my neices and newphews who live with me (parents died a while back) to boarding school.

It actually did those lil brats a world of good.

Makes no difference what school, everyone gets to the same university where you're equal.

As long as the school doesn't employ complete retards or criminals, and treats all children equally, you just need to spend some time with your kid and they will succeed.

Throwing money at it and making them someone else's problem doesn't suddenly turn the fruits of your loins into Isaac Newtons...

@epah - look at this guy. Comparing his chatsworth school to your R500K a year school. Show him or show them quality of your school education.

Agree in part BUT some people I listen too at times have repeatedly told me the friends your kid makes in High School is an added advantage in varsity and later on as well.

Seeing it with a colleagues kid now as well.

Public Primary. Private High School.

There's two sides to that. I made new friends in uni, because whoever I went to school with either went to different universities or studied different degrees. I believe this actually helped me.

If the kid uses their friends as a crutch and is unable to make new friends, they're going to have a hard time in the workplace where the churn of meeting new people is far more frequent as you or other people keep changing jobs...

I don't agree. Some schools teach you to do as well as possible in matric exams to boost their distinction count (spoonfeed), while others teach you how to think for yourself. The latter end up much better off later in life, generally speaking.
