Top TV - Epic fail or just a poor start?

Well said. Where did you get the number "30" from?

I can also confirm the 30 staff manning the telephones. I asked the one TopTV lady that phoned me back this exact question.

And I must add...... they are SUPER friendly and helpfull. Even, like Lancelot mentioned, answering 'other' questions you might have without making you hurry up because 40 000 other clients are waiting.

(yes I confess.....I asked her a question that kept her 1 min longer on the phone. sorry for making the rest of the callers wait)

Granted they have sold 50 000 units in a short matter of time and congratulations are in order, this is still not their primary incoming. They are a service provider after
all, recurring income in the form of monthly subscriptions is what will keep them a float. As long as they keep their customers happy they should be sorted.

In all honesty I think ODM should have been more transparent on the content and should have done a little more homework.

Irrespective of that, I wish Top TV all the best.

Give them a break I say. Multichoice had YEARS to get where they are now & if given the chance, TopTV will do it in half the time.

One person experiences some bad service (understandable why) & then everyone climbs in too. Put yourself in their shoes & just give then a few weeks at least.

We have been waiting for years for a competitor to DSTV, I dont mind waiting a couple of days for my installation. I can understand some people being frustrated but look at it this way, this overwhelming response means they will be able to add more channels quicker than they initially estimated.

Damn straight! And also the huge interest will have DSTV sitting up and taking notice... if they weren't already. I just hope they start getting cancellations!

Well as I mentioned in another thread a few days ago, when I was at Multichoice on Saturday, the lady at the counter said they'd spent most of the morning downgrading customers from Premium to Compact so even if people aren't actively cancelling their subscriptions, it seems many of them are prepared to take the knock by losing sport and M-Net. (A bouquet that DSTV should have offered YEARS ago.)
So, regardless, they're losing what probably amounts to a ton of cash.

How long did it take DSTV to accumulate all these premium channels? When did they launch their first PVR decorder? When did they Launch HD channels? All this wasn't done in the first year of launch. ODM might launch their PVR late this year or early next year. They made it clear that their are not looking to compete with Multichoice but just to offer consumers in the lower income bracket and your average earning family some entertainment at a reasonable price. Those that can afford DSTV premium well good for you. In time they will be competition when Toptv can source more programming and more transponders to increase their offerings. DSTV did not start with all the channels they have today. With experience you can do better than you did before. Give Toptv time. For the record i don't think DSTV was ever going to launch their latest affordable package (DSTV Lite) if it wasn't for toptv. Obviously they are worried about losing most of their smaller packages clients to ODM for that is their primary business focus at the moment.

I'M sure any good woman knows that if she wants a man to act, give him some competition! GO TOPTV

I've mentioned before about the F1 and EPL that's on premium and that's the 'blackmail option' where we don't have a choice. They have Sentanta who does cover EPL matches. Maybe with F1, they can negotiate with BBC or ITV or maybe get repeats. I'm getting this initially as a gift for someone and will pay the R99 subscription but will really consider getting it for me and downgrading my premium to compact.
As to the question that started the thread? Its no biggy, I've been waiting 24 hours to get through but I can understand why. If its over a week than I will feel let down. Epic excitement !

But to survive, they will have to do things quicker than MC. They do not have the luxury of no competition. Anyway, if MC did not see them as a threat, they would have aired their ads, no?

MC is highly likely to strike back hard if Toptv doesn't fail on its own accord. I hope they (Toptv) do make a success of it all, though.

I think the huge demand should be motivation enough for them. More subscribers means more money, more money means more content and negotiating power. Compare to dstv yes they are behind and will need to act fast in terms of technology improvements e.g. Pvr,Multiview & HD etc.

Wow some people have amazing expectations. As many people have said, it is 2 days later. Give them a chance.

I will soon be trying to get going with them as this is affordable for me and will still give me much more choice now as I can not afford DSTV. I am happy to pay R 159 pm and not always use it, but am not happy to pay R 600 pm and not get max benefit.

Well done TopTV and good luck for the road ahead. I am sure there will be some teething problems, but am sure you will get on top soon!

Fark you people like moaning! Stick with Dstv and shut up! As for me, I'll keep my Dstv and also subscribe to Top TV. Bitch all u want; Top TV is here and they will improve over time. F.R.O. for now please!

To be honest and was shown in one or two of my other posts I was very impatient,
I have had the time to get of my high horse and think about the situation, we have bought over a months supply of decoders in a couple of hours even the installers are already at week and half (not going to mention names) but one installer is already at next week Tuesday to install, and today it is raining so I wonder how many installations they will get done. I do not think it is a reflection on their service, can anyone that has gotten through and got their customer number complain about the service they received?
We are all just anxious to play with our new toys, saying that however I have a problem that I need to get my customer number before Thursday as I have an install date already but no customer number. Anyone know when the web page is going to be running to get a customer number?

The BEST advise I can give is to do what somebody else suggested: Call them at 06:59 and keep dialling till the lines activate.
Then quickly press 1 (Interested in package) then 2(Home User) then 3 (Installations) for each subsequent menu. (Shouldn't take longer than about 2 or 3 seconds. Then somebody will answer immediately.

So to clarify: The dialling sequence is as follows: 0860086788 -> 1 -> 2 -> 3.

MultiChoice have struck back with a cheaper package and it offers far less than TopTV. As it is if you have R250.00 a month to spend on TV TopTV is the best choice and in this economic climate there are a lot more people willing to spend R250.00 a month on TV than there are people willing to spend R600.00.

And on topic. This launch has been anything but Epic fail or a poor start. They are shifting units like hotcakes. Most callcentres on the planet would buckle under this load.
