TopTV eats at Naspers’ margins

DStv Monopoly

TopTV really need some decent sport.

I've been told by some inside sources that DStv are rather anti-competitive when it comes to broadcasting rights for sport, especially for european soccer.. If there are 2 licences available, DStv makes sure they buy both to avoid competition.. Until this practice ends & TopTV are given a chance to buy broadcasting rights for the major sports, I don't see them as ever becoming significant competitors to DStv...

If Top TV starts buying expensive rights to sports, before they have a solid subscriber base, they risk going under like GTV did a few years back. I don't think Top TV is ready to do this, if they cannot even broadcast up to date movies and series yet.

On the MC forums they are constantly telling us that MC and MNet/SuperSport are not the same company. In that case, I wonder if TTV would ever be able to broadcast Super Sport. Doubt it.
@QT, do you have any info on IS20? How many transponders available for MC etc. Also heard there was a new bird joining or replacing Sirius 4.

Not a chance. Different company maybe, but both under the Naspers umbrella...

IS20 coming next year. Not much info available yet. Sounds like they will be using the same frequencies used on IS7 and in the same orbital position... We are also expecting extra capacity besides existing transponders. Sirius 4 replacement coming soon too. We hope the EIRP (signal strength) will improve, because it is obviously not great at the moment.

“For a long time DStv has been the only Pay-TV station in the country and this has allowed it to build a strong brand in the market.

... and the fact that the regulator was unwilling to appoint a second licensee kinda helped DSTv entrench it's monopoly position right? :D

I hope this company crashes and burns. Seriously I hope they go bankrupt.

yeah, unfortunately this is the most important aspect for a lot of people [myself included], i don't see the purpose of DSTV, or TopTV without sport.

easy. Some people couldn't be bothered to download tv shows.

wish they'd lower their high subs, would make a huge diffrence, oh, and fix their crappy software

Unless toptv gets some sport i would imagine they won't bother dstv too much.

I also cannot ever see a company being able to rival dstv on sport, you need some serious money to broadcast that amount of sport
