TopTV fate

I hope everyone looks forward to some more DStv increases coming up when TopTV crashes and burns.

Seems to me like a lot of their content is focused only on the indian viewers. Whats the size of the indian population in SA?

DStv has their increases once every year... They are not going to randomly increase because TopTV went bankrupt. Please explain?

Ever heard of a monopoly exploiting their position? Or how about competition being good for the consumer? </explanation>

When TopTV entered the market, DStv lowered the prices of their lower-tier packages... to R250 or something.

I'm not sure you understand the implications of a monopoly properly, and i'm not going to explain them either.... but basically, higher prices for less value/service.

Yeah. Okay guys. If you say so.

Let's explain it this way:
-If you were the only person to supply rubber in south africa, you control the price.
-If there are 2 or 3 other guys that also supply rubber, you need to lower your prices if you want anyone to actually buy rubber from you.

Thanks for that Keeper. I understand a monopoly... I'm just saying, as someone working in the satellite tv industry, that they will not suddenly increase their prices when TopTV folds.

It wouldn't make much business sense, if they want to attract the Top TV clients who are suddenly sitting with no service and also to keep the existing clients they have on the lower packages... Their packages will stay where they are now, with the normal yearly increases. Maybe DStv will stop doing the heavily subsidised R599 installations. This was done to counter Top TV's heavily subsidised installations, which I believe was a big reason for their downfall.

If Toptv is in trouble, we are at the mercy of Monochoice. Where is dtt when you need it?
