I got a call over the weekend from a survey company asking me questions about TopTV.

They did not ask me my bank details, ID number, my physical address or any other personal details for that matter (just TopTV related issues), so I guess that means it was a legit call.

Some of the questions they asked included the following:
- Which channels do you watch the most on TopTV?
- What type of programming do you like - comedies, movies, documentaries?
- Do you have DStv?
- What price do you expect to pay for a PVR for TopTV?
- Would R150 for a PVR decoder be a reasonable price or would this pricing make you wonder how good the product is? and
- Have you made any complaint to TopTV's customer care?

From what these questions were asking, the matters that they seem to want to find out info. on seem like the issues of; the imminent PVR and the new channels.

To me it seems they want to introduce PVR (one to replace your existing one) at a very cheap price and they are continuing to focus on movies and dramas, with no focus on sports (a major concern for me).

Have you been interviewed?

What do you make of the survey?

Any suggestions to TopTV (in case they read this too) on any of these issues.

Interesting. I did a web survey for them a few months ago. I thought that they were going to introduce PVR as a software update for existing decoders. In fact I hope that they follow through with that plan. Personally I enjoy the reality shows, documentaries. Also I wish that they included season and episode numbers in the program description.

I'm not sure if that is possible most normal decoders don't have built in hard drives. How can a software update create a hard drive to save the media on or does it save the recording to another medium like air?

There is a USB port on the decoder, it's just not enabled at the moment. Maybe plugging in an external HD would do the trick of an instant PVR if they enable the port?

PVR Requires more than one receiver.
They could set it up so you can record what you are watching, set up scheduled recordings and possibly pause.

Interesting comments about the PVR.

In my opinion, it could be that they would be selling a small add on unit to enhance the STBs that are there to act as the PVR. That R150 question really got me thinking. They just might sell something like a hard drive with PVR recording functions.

What do you think?
