Hi Everybody,

Do not you know some SA local torrent sites to avoid the Telkom 3G cap???

Thanks,
Damian.

i haven't come across any SA torrent sites, but even if you download a torrent from a local site, you aren't guaranteed to connect to only SA peers... data from overseas peers will still be capped, shaped and strangled :(

after all, torrents smoke cigarettes and lurk in alleyways, and never do their homework, and listen to rock n roll, right? :P

I recall there being two big local torrent sites, you may have to hunt through local IRC networks - the one was called 'usefulstuff' I think, the other torrent site/chan was its 'competition' - I dont recall its name or the tracker url - but if you find the one, you'll probably find the other :)

EDIT - found one of the two local http urls for torrents, sent it private..

There are a few local sites and its easy to restrict IP connections. IP filtering can prevent international IP's or other local unwanted IPs from connecting

whats the legal situation regarding torrents in this country, its an interesting subject whilst all these hardware seizures and website closures are taking place in the states.

I know in the netherlands you may download but not upload copyrighted content and in sweden torrent trackers cannot be closed since it isn't illegal to provide information on where to download copyrighted content or host a torrent swarm, bit whats the deal here in SA?

Would law enforcement agents go after the uploaders and people with the files on thier PC or would they go after the peopel hostign the torrents and tracker (even though in all probibility there is no copyright infringment taking place on the server itself), or would nobody bother at all?

I doubt anyone would bother. Even the street vendors aren't getting hassled too much these days, there just simply isn't the manpower. This may change in the future but with the government not even knowing how to spend its budget I don't think it will be anytime soon ;) Perhaps Dominic can give us the definitive legal rundown.

Torrents as a technology are legally neutral, copying copyrighted material however is a bad thing™, but is there anyone in goverment capable of tracking torrent usage? Probably not.

loacl torrent tracker

A few local trackers exist.... Ask around

Ah man, it's become so prevalent, it's like buying a frikkin packet of peanuts and an orange from a roadside table.

Plenty of people at work buy these dodgy roadside DVD releases with 3 to 5 movies on them and these are people who "law abiding citizens" from "good families"

I borrowed one from someone at my offices and it was terrible - a complete and utter waste of R100

They are usually the nastiest Telesync releases you could ever imagine - about 30% of the screen cut off, usually in the worst place, so you get half the head of an actor cut off.

It's like going to watch a movie at the cinema with a dark pair of scratched sunglasses and two paper cups taped over your ears.

Then again, 90% of the terrible quality on these DVD's were **** movies in the first place, so you get an added extra **** bonus with every R100 spent !

That I totally agree with you, I would not even spent a single cent for that.

I never get those adds "Buying pirated movies is stealing". I just sit there and my mind boggles, buy? wtf? Why else did we make the internet :P

Its not illegal in South Africa to purchase or own pirated dvd`s btw. Its just illegal to sell them for a profit
