Hi

Firstly apologies if this is the incorrect place to ask the question.

What is a torrent?
How exactly does one access a torrent?
Does this work via P2P?

What are risks involved?
Are there any safe torrents available?

Your answers are most appreciated.

Regards
L

Torrents are P2P. the file you get off the torrent site is a .tor, it links you to other peers / seeders with the file u want. U need to use an application like bitcommet or vuze (azueres) to open the .tor file and initiate the download. Always risks involved, make sure you scan everything u download. Top site is thepiratebay.org

do a google search for a file you want + torrent; i.e. windows 7 x64 torrent. Torrent files are broken up into chunks so if one of the files breaks you can often search it specifically. My fav application is utorrent which is free and very lightweight; you may need to configure your router to do port forwarding if your speeds are unoptimal.

Torrents are not really 100% safe but I have never had a problem with one - but the early win7 release had trojans apparently. The best thing if you're worried is to scan your files with an antivirus software before unpacking it. My favourite torrent site is www.mininova.org. But international torrents are very expensive in SA - rather search for some local alternative. They do exist if you know where to look.
