Toshiba Sattelite Pro L100 problem - shuts down without warning

A friend recently bought a Toshiba Sattelite Pro L100 laptop - yesterday it suddenly shut down without warning.

When I press the power button, the power and hard drive lights flash on, then shut off immediately (doesn't even last a second). The power light will also remain off until the reset button is pressed again, or you unplug the AC adaptor, then plug it back in. Every time I try to turn on the laptop by pressing the power button, the same process repeats itself, power light and h/drive light comes on, and then shuts off immediately after 1 second.

According to the user manual, if the laptop's internal temp becomes too high, the laptop will automatically enter Hibernation Mode or Standby Mode and shut down.
What's strange though, is that even if I leave the laptop switched off for an hour or three (therefore cooled off sufficiently), then it does the exact same thing when I try to switch it on again (shuts down after 1 second).

The laptop never appeared to physically overheat, so I'm surprised that overheating is the cause of this problem? (Please note that the laptop is only 2 months old and therefore should be quite clean of dust)

What should I do? Any suggestions?
How do I rectify the problem? I have not been able to switch on the laptop successfully since.

I did that, it doesn't make any difference. With or without the battery, I get the same problem.
There are several threads online discussing overheating issues with Toshiba laptops, where the solution is to clean the dust between the heatsink and the cooling fan of the CPU. However, this laptop is only 2 months old and dust shouldn't be an issue. I therefore suspect the problem to lie elsewhere.

If I connect the AC cord, the battery light is displayed, therefore showing that the AC is successfully charging the battery. When I push the laptop's power button, nothing happens.

what about the power settings in control panel, when running on battery the default setting is about 5 mins before it shuts down. Maybe changing them?

Stop messing around with it and take it to the Toshiba Service centre in Mowbray. Don't take it to the other place - they are rip-off artists.

Toshiba are very good at looking after their customers, sometimes even if your warranty is old.

They are also pretty efficient and will have it going within a day or two. Remember to have your windows serials if they aren't on the PC.

Toshiba in Mowbray fixed it. It was a loose wire (or sensor?) under the keyboard area.
