Total Cost: ADSL vs Vodacom 3G

Just trying to get my head around total cost of ADSL vs Vodacom 3G. Let's assume devices/installation is paid for. Would the following be approximately correct:

Connection Fee: R152

1Gig: (152+59 = 207). Vs 289
2Gig: (152+119 = 271) Vs 389
3Gig: (152+179 = 331) Vs 589

Aware that one cant truly compare different services like this, but it seems at least in the 1Gig (which I usually use) it is competitive if you consider your ability to roam.

The ADSL used was low end and shaped as well.

For data usage less than [not equal to] 3GB, HSDPA is much more cost-effective than an equivalent amount of data delivered via ADSL in SA.

The issue I've had is the bolt on once you're out of data.

With ADSL I paid R99.00 for each additional GB and Vodacom is about 3x that.

The result? I stop using Vodacom at 1GB cap while with ADSL, I use it the entire month and topped up as needed

ZAR99.00/GB for ADSL is quite expensive, it is normally ZAR70.00/GB and less.

The solution with HSDPA, if you know you're regularly going to need to transfer considerably more than 1GB of data, is to buy 2GB data bundles instead of 1GB data bundles.

You sure? Vodacom 1GB contract rates is R298. ADSL *prepaid* is R68. Even if you work in line rental its still cheaper. ADSL modems are also cheaper afaik. And additional data is R0.068 vs R0.19. Maybe I'm missing something, but HSDPA only makes sense to me if one needs mobility or Telkom isn't cooperating.

an adsl doesnt give you any nasty R10000 suprises due to billing errors which they still make you pay for

Last year I calculated that my HomeDSL313.6kbits/s line [aka "Fast"] costs me more than HSDPA 1.8 does for data bundles sizes smaller than 3GB, unless something has changed that I'm not aware of, that should still be true.

I'm not too clued up about the VC data price structure so maybe I shouldn't be arguing against someone with hands on experience.

Either way, I think VC+MTN can be credited with pushing down ADSL prices. kudos

Vodacom charge neither though They're 3-4x more expensive ...

Changing to a 2GB wouldn't work for me as I use 1GB more often than 2GB. They should have something more flexible for users like myself - as at the moment I'm ripped off for the months I use 2GB ... or have the option to get ripped off for the months I use 1GB

Ok ... 2GB is only R100.00 more at R449.00 ... actually may rather go for that
