It's always amazing to see these consumption figures.

Having done quite a bit of regularity rallying, the last thing you are thinking of is fuel consumption when you are driving at ten tenths, trying to maintain an average speed, that involves some fairly hairy driving! ;)

Eddie Biefeld used the least fuel overall but it was a tight contest this year.
Claimed by many to be the “epitome of motorsport” the annual Total Economy Run has become South Africa's benchmark efficiency competition and this year saw the 35th running of the competition in a 1109km event staged around Thaba 'Nchu in the Free State.

50 crews, representing 18 car companies, set out to find the most fuel efficient passenger vehicles in the country and in the end there were two category winners, one for petrol and another for diesel.

Overall winner and top performer in the diesel category was Eddie Bielfeld (navigated by Brian Page) in a Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI with a fuel consumption figure of 4.396 litres per 100km. Bielfeld enthused: “It has been a great weekend and very close battle for the win against our class and other diesel-powered competitors.”

Winner of the petrol section, with a fuel consumption figure of 5.191 litres per 100km, was Robbie Coetzee, navigated by rally driver Craig Trott in a Toyota Aygo.

The event was staged over two days, with competitors not only having to contend with their rivals but also the adverse weather conditions that saw temperatures drop below freezing point in the mornings and only just rise to above single digits before sunset.

Drivers had to adhere to specific speeds and arrive at check points at specified times, while travelling through city centres, on the open highways, around road construction sites and all while trying to outwit their Class rivals.

Damn VAGs. Who cares about fuel economy, Opels are awesomer. :/

pmpl first she makes hm change his surname, now she's doing the navigating.

This was quite surprising for me. The Golf out-performed the Polo.... See, bigger is better!!! Im gonna buy me a 4 lt V8 diesel and it should then out-perform the Golf :)

You'd be so lucky :)

It just comes down to gearing. The Polo Bluemotion has shorter gear ratios to help the 1.2 engine along a bit. This clearly has an effect on the highway ability of the car. VW's official figures are consistent with the results of the Economy Run.

No, that was my Roux impersonation :D

Well done :D ! ... and in my best Ray William Johnson impersonation "I'm Rouxenator, and I approve this message"

But seriously, if they had this then there would be less VAGs.

The difference in engine capacities skews the results a bit don't you think?

A 2.0 diesel is obviously going to use less juice than a 2.5 or 3lt.
