hi there

i need some assistance please. i purchased a totolink n600r router as it had very good reviews but when i try to connect my adsl line it kills it completely, the adsl line as well as the telephone line. i'm on a 8mb 100gb afrihost package and when i connect my d-link 300 it works perfectly.

i connected the totolink as a repeater and that works perfectly but i cant seem to get it set up directly.

how can i get this fixed?

thanks,

AFAIK the N600r is a wifi router. Where exactly are you pluging the telephone line? In one of the LAN ports or the WAN? Either-way, what you need is a modem! You risk damaging the LAN/WAN ports because of the voltage discrepancy! Telephone lines work with 50v while the router's ports expect 5v. However, most if not all routers have in-built, over voltage protection to save the day from people like you and I :)

The orange ones are the LAN ports (10/100 mbit). The yellow one is the WAN port. No modem port!

You can use any old ADSL modem and link it to the N600r via the WAN port and you'll have a very powerful wifi internet!
The N600r is one of the best/strongest Wifi routers for the 2.4Ghz band. It is very sturdy and you get a lot of 'bang for the buck'.

Any cheap ADSL modem will do. I have a few of them lying around but I am not from South Africa :(

I am sure, if you ask around you'll find someone who is prepared to send you a ADSL modem for free (Christmas). You just have to pay the postage :)

Lol... Lucky I have the D-link already. So is this totolink n600r not an ADSL router?

No. Neither ADSL nor Cellular. But it is a very good WIFI router/booster/extender.
Even without the BOOST-ON will still give a hiding to your D-Link (when it comes to wifi signal strength) :)
Actually you have the opportunity to test them. Place the devices about a metre from each other, switch them on and then use your cellphone to check the signal strength. You can use any GooglePlayStore WiFi app.
I suggest WiFi-Analyzer. Move around a bit and let us know.
