How high can a tower/antenna be in a residential suburb, before one has to have a specific license or permission to erect it. My understanding is that an antenna can be placed on private land with the permission from the landlord alone, within a residential area. The tower must just not exceed a certain height. Does anyone know what that threshold is?

I think it's 30 metres but you will need to make sure. You will probably be able to find out from your local muncipality.

afaik its 3m from the peak (highest point) of your house or if you have a HAM lic. you can put up a 12m tower. I may be wrong but you would have to check with the local municipalities.

I agree with mufasa 100% - We have a Jawug member who has recently passed his Ham license, and he is now allowed to construct a 12m tower in his yard.

I have heard about the blanket 12m restriction for hams.... but I think you'll find that the tower restrictions will fall under municipal by-laws and building codes.

Each metro will have their own variation on the theme - but phoning the building department of your local municipality would probably get you a decent answer.

We had quite a laugh trying to find out the maximum height when I was still based in Richards Bay.

Nobody, including the muni guys knew. Took them a while to figure out. Turned out the max "safe" height is 16 meters.

The whole issue is a muddle in muncipalities from messina to cape town. i went through numerous channels to try find out the requirements for errecting a mast on my property in Alberton. City planning passed me on to the guys that deal with advertizing billboards and so on and so forth. The requirements ranged from full plans along with environmental impact studies to "just get permission from your neighbours" to one of the local metro heads who said "put it up and if anyone complains, come see me". so i took the safest route and got written permission from my neighbour and went ahead and errected the thing. BTW, the best answer i could get in terms of maximum hight is that you have to have red lights on anything over 22m high. Mine is 21,5m high (heh heh!). so far its been up for 3 months and nobody has complained.

I have had a very similar response here with the local municipality. No one knows the answer to the question. I have now been advised to fill out a "Special Consent Procedure" which consists of 1.Enviromental report 2.Traffic Report 3.An adver in local paper then wait 21days for objections 4.Notification by registered post of neighbours...........aaaah! It goes on and on. The "16meter safe hieght" I would imagine includes stay wires? Was there an application proceedure you had to follow? Or was permission from the landlord sufficient if you stayed below this 16m hieght?
