One morning out of the blue it would not start. So i let my father use my car. He came home in the evenings and it started first go no problems.
The following morning he got up a bit earlier to start it, it started fine. He let it run for a few minutes, turned it off and carried on with his morning routine. Not more then 30 minutes later he goes out to start it and its completely dead. Won't even turn over.

I originally thought it was an immobilizer problem. But i am not so sure anymore. All the lights come on so i don't think its a battery issue, unless one of the cells are dead.
Is there anything i can check when i get home that might help me determine the problem? My car knowledge is very limited.

And before anyone says it, i did tell my dad to take it in to be checked but he is too stubborn to do that and wants to fix it himself, its just a pain for me because he always has to use my car and i need to find a lift to work.

Is it swinging when you turn the key to start? If is, it might be the fuel cut-out if you have level 4 alarm installed. Try by-passing this if you can.

If not swinging, can you kick start? Could be starter needs a service.

Otherwise, could be your spark plugs.

I suspect it may be your solenoid, not kicking-in the starter.
What year/ model /engine is your car?

I had similar problems with my '91 corolla.
(the inside rusts and causes that the 'pin' cannot move to make contact to allow current to flow)

Like Sydwayz asks, can you push start your car? (then you can rule out immobilser, and fuel / spark issues)

Put the car into 4/5th gear, rock it forwards and backwards, back into neutral and then try starting it.

How long is the current battery in it? Earlier this year I was able to start well in the morning, and afternoon drive to home. A couple of times I made some stops on the way to work and the car would not even swing when the key was turned. It took a few minutes, I switched of the lights and tried again and it worked. Work is 10KM and these short stops pushed the ailing battery past its limits, as it was not able to recharge properly on the way.

The lights will still work with a poor battery, but not have enough oomph for the starter motor which draws 100's of Amps for the few 100's of a second. I had six years with the same battery, but the anecdotes from other Tazz colleagues was that maybe 1 year lifetime for them. With their Dehben sound systems of course.

It turns over, but just won't start. I also thought spark plugs, asked him to get new ones if he can.

Will give the push starting ideas a try this evening. My father is under the impression its a moisture issue. He seems to think its when ever there is rain or mist that it doesn't start.

I think it is the contacts behind the ignition key. These wear and also, the small oblong key that transmits the motion of the barrell to the switch can wear. At our locksmiths we get 5 of these a week. You can buy the switch part separately. The only way to diagnose it is to measure from the thick red (supply) wire to earth, and then the AUX and START terminals. If you want to do it with the battery disconnected, use the continuity setting on the meter to determine whether there is continuity between supply, aux and start

Has the starting problem been resolved? If so what was the problem. I have the same issue now. Took it in for aircon repair. AC working and workshop washed the engine. Now the engine turns over, but there is no spark at the plugs. All connectors dried, still will not start. Found the main engine earth loose and retightened, but still does not start. Now my AC works, but car does not start. Any ideas.....

Something got wet. Go buy a can of Castrol DWF and start spraying all electrical connectors, open distributor housing and spray.

It could be the fuel pump.

/Request lock

EDIT: I was going to say get new points and a condenser installed.

Hi my 96 conquest swings but doesn't start I checked the fuel supply its all okay what could be the problem

Since this thread has been necro'ed it may the right place to ask.

What is the fuel consumption for 1.3 2e Tazz, 20 years old? I seem to get 10Km/litre as a rule, 35L gets me 350Km or so in suburb traffic with an average of under 10Km/trip, very stop-start-backed-up traffic.
