Hi My BB,

My Toyota Corolla 2009 is off service plan. I need to take it in for the 75000 Kms. I received a quote of approx. R 2800 from Toyota.

Does know anyone where else I can take my car for the yearly service? A private mechanic?
Car service city seems to have a bad reputation on hellopeter.

Thanks

Its the normal service, the consultant told me they change the oil and fuel filter etc. General service, no other issues with my car.

Before you take it to a backyard mechanic, be sure to consider the implications involved when it comes time to sell your car. It's fine if you plan on keeping it, or know somebody who will pay you a decent price for it - but if you plan on trading it in or selling it to some random, your resale price will take a knock...

Fuel and Oil Filter, Oil, Air filter, safety inspection, general inspection of brake pads, belts etc.

I think they quoted you a decent price, if you do go there, ask them to check plugs as well.

Thanks.

Will it be cheaper if I got the parts from Auto Zone maybe then got them to install it?
Or do they only use Toyota Approved parts?

1st year off service plan, so trying all options.

R2800 is not that much for a service, and having your car serviced at the dealers looks good in the service book when selling your car one day.

I doubt you can take your parts to them and say fit it.

I have a 2007 Corolla and I still have it serviced at Toyota. The services are reasonably priced and it helps the resale value to have genuine parts and the full service history.

Most "genuine parts" are just "non-genuine" parts in a different box.

Exactly, R2800 to fit parts that barely cost more than R600 if that and they no doubt will get the apprentice to do the work because it's such a simple job.

I vote find a reputable independent workshop and just carry on servicing the car at the specified intervals and get them to stamp the book. That's all anyone wants to see, that the car was properly maintained and looks well looked after.

It's not like agents don't ever properly cock everything up but they will always charge you a mint for the convenience.
