Hello everyone, I am new to the forum...

I have a Toyota D4D 2KD bakkie that cranks but does not start. If you spray starter fluid, it starts. I have checked all fuses, all relays and wires... all is well. The thing is, tgd pump is not pushing out diesel, only a few teaspoons here and there and then nothing.

I checked for trouble codes and got P1601, Injector compensation code. I tried to clear it but it came back. So the compensation codes were entered for injector no.1 but the computer refused the code. The code was entered atleast five times for the same injector before movinb on to the next. The computer refused to accept the compensation codes for ALL FOUR injectors.

Furthermore, I then checked the injector driver which is in the engine bay on the left gand side... it looked fine. We removed it and put it in another car and the car started, no problems. So we eliminated the EDU in that regard...

Plus, there is no injector pulse to the injectors but the engine speed from the crank sensor is there. Were checked with the diagnostic machine for RPM signal and it is there... plus the battery cranks strongly...

Immobiliser red light goes out when the key is turned on and it flashes when the key in the off position.

To top things off, the car did something strange while cranking it recently, IT DID NOT STOP CRANKING EVEN WHEN THE KEY WAS OFF AND REMOVED. It just kept cranking until I removed one terminal hastingly. Looking at the engine management diagram, the starting signal from the ignition switch goes through the ECU before reaching the starter...

I am strongly leaning towards a bad ECU as it is the only thing that we have not checked...

Any thoughts gents?

Sincerely
Sizwe

Hi Sizwe,

This site is trusted in tech for life and relationship advice, not car problems. For that you have to search for a place called "The Grotto".

Fortunately for you I stumbled accross this post first. I remember doing some research on the D4D as i wanted to purchase a Fortuner with that engine in. One of the more common problems that I noted was that at some point the injectors go bad and either need to be replaced or refurbished.

Out of interest, what is the mileage of the car?

I hope this helps.

The grotto is no more.

In terms of the OP's problem - check fuel pressures. It sounds more to me like a buggered fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter.

Thanks gents, filter was checked too, it is fine. The priming pump squits plenty of fuel when pressed. The only problem is that the pump is not supplying it to the injectors. Oh by the way, the diesel pump was changed and still nothing. The fuel pressure sensor registers 0 pressure and I have verified that the fuel does not come out of the diesel pump...

How did you test the fuel pump relays?
Does the ECU send a signal to the relay to turn on the pump?

Try asking here..

I registered but my membership was never confirmed via email... meaning that I cannot post. I contacted the admin a few days ago, but not response of today.

Does the pump turn on when you turn the ignition from off to on (not to start position)?

You should hear a humming sound.

There is no relay that turns on the pump per se. The pump is directly controlled by the ECU (via the suction control valve). The timing belt turns the pump sprocket but fuel suction and delivery is controlled by the ECU through the suction control valve. There is the main relay that powers up the computer and there is the EDU relay that powers up the injector driver only.

How did I test those relays? They are soldered together as one unit called an intergration relay= so I replaced them with a good unit, and nothing changed.

There will be an electrically powered fuel pump which will have a relay and fuse.

This one does not have an electric fuel pump. It only has the pump attached to the engine.

What beats me though is the fact that I even plugged in an electric pump and diesel gushes out of the pipe that sends fuel to the diesel pump but not out of the high pressure pump that feeds the injectors.

If your high pressure pump is new and it's getting fuel in but not putting out then it's not turning on. You said you tried another relay so it can't be that.

Maybe its a faulty sensor?

Input sensors responsible for injectof pulse are crank and cam sensors... there is rpm signal.
