Hi all,

When I return to SA, I am planning on buying a Toyota MR2 Spyder, around a 2002 model.

I already know the following about the car:
- headlights may fog up due to inefficient seals
- got virtually no storage space
- cannot disable passanger seat airbag (however I have conflicting reports about this)
- quite zippy and fast around corners
- light on fuel
- doesn't sound too great
- very solid on the road
- standard tyres are not the best
- very reliable
- comes in manual and SMT gearboxes
- comes in hardtop and softtop.

Any more tips / experiences / things to look out in this car??

They are hard to find, the only ones in the Cape I was able to find were yellow coloured

MR2? Whats wrong with this one?

No need to keep up with the Jones' when you return. In fact for that price you could get a second hand BMW. Or a car that doesnt scream "I should have got the pink one".

You would be very proud of me BTW - last week I took your advice and tightened my belt - my fan belt no longer makes that strange noise.

That ain't a MR2 man.

Might also have been indicative of a belt that's about to go, or have been warped (heat, etc.). I would suggest a new belt and tighten it real good yes.

Get a Mazda MX-5

Owned a black MX-5 from 2003 to 2005, was a chic car to say the least, and the fact that it was black didn't help much. Was also a bit too small for me, and the inside developed rattles in my last year of ownership. I just didn't get an impression of good build quality; the MR2 is also not the greatest but much improved in that regard I believe!

And the MR2's rear-mounted engine just does it for me...

nothing close to an exotic imo, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder ...

Nope, it was the MK2, produced worldwide 1998–2005. I had a 2003 model.
Mechanical hard top on the new MK3 is quite nice though

Yeah agree on the S2000 but geez its still very expensive 4 such an oldish car.

...but worth it - I've had mine since Feb this year - when I fly to Johannesburg for a week and have to drive a rental - I actually get withdrawal symptoms.

Nice thing about the Honda S2000 (maybe the same for other cars), is there are great online resources for 'upgrading/modifying' the vehicle yourself, and you can order tons of parts for relatively cheap over the net.

I've done the following myself:
1.) K&N FIPK (and I know jack about cars)
2.) Painted the calipers red - was actually a suggestion from someone on the forum - to lazy to check.
3.) Installed a custom aero screen.
4.) Glove box seperator.

Next planned work myself:
1.) Exhaust upgrade to a bolt on 70mm.
2.) Decent clutch.
3.) New brakes.

Other work I won't be doing myself:
1.) Change the final gear.
2.) Contemplating a a supercharger/turbo... but it'll cost about R70,000 - R80,000 installed.

Pffft.... I wouldn't set foot in an S2000... one of the worst cars in the Honda line up... even Honda admitted it once, they have a lot of issues... imagine getting to work one day, and you want to remove your briefcase from the boot and the whole carpet is covered in oil... not cool at all... and this was just an example...

That has got to be the biggest load of crap I have heard this year - Their engines are well known to be bulletproof.

I assume you're talking from experience - or are you just trolling?

And how the hell does oil get in the boot? WTF

.... of what happens when you put oil in your boot because you cant figure out that the engine is in the front!
And then also stick your briefcase in your new found "engine"
baka!
