Verdict to the RAV 4 engine breakdown; when a vehicle is rarely used and not regularly serviced, it is advisable to have the service done a minimum of one’s a year irrespective of the kilometers.
With the prolonged standing of the vehicle, the viscosity of the oil changes causing build up of hardened sludge blocking the mesh on the oil pump pick and thick sludge in the sump.
Eventually the thick sludge lodges itself to the oil pump pickup and starves the engine of oil causing serious damage and could be very, very costly.
Let this be a warning.

I want to thank Russell Goosen and his team at McCarthy Toyota PMB for all their assistance and affording me more than expected benefits with the rebuilding of the RAV4 breakdown.

Your owner's manual will indicate exactly this. In fact it's a general rule for all cars.

Unless you know for a fact when a car was last serviced, it's always a good idea to have it done when you buy secondhand. It also means that you get to find out from the mechanic if there are any problems that you might have missed when checking the car before buying.

What if a vehicle is being driven daily and does less than 15000km in a year? Is it necessary to service it at 1 year intervals? We are currently only doing about 10000km a year on one of our vehicles.

Almost always, yes. I don't know of any car where it is longer than a year, but obviously am open to correction here.

On a practical level, I honestly doubt it'll make a huge difference is it's every 18 months, but the manufacturer's recommendation is usually for a service every 12 months.
