Started car shopping
currently own a A4, and looking at the possibility of buying a SUV or cross over.

Anyways looking at the RAV4,
there are two diesel versions:
2.2D GX(R418 100) and 2.2D VX AT(R497 100)

the GX is a 6-Speed Manual and VX is Automatic.
VX supposed to be the higher spec version only available in automatic.
not willing to buy an automatic.
According to the specifications on the Toyota site the
only option for seat trim and door trim on the GX version is Fabric
compared to the VX which has full leather including the steering wheel,
whereas the steering wheel on the GX is Urethane.

I've never owned a Toyota, but is it normal to not have a choice on
the fabric/leather options for the seats? would they be able to change it on request?

Only other issue that might be a pain is that the GX version
does not come with cruise control,
which atm use on a daily basis on my far commute, so used to it!
Pro on the GX is that it has a full 17" spare wheel and the VX has a space saver.

not too phased about the other spec differences.
any RAV4 diesel owners?

Toyota has never been big on accessories for their cars. You can always ask the dealer to have leather fitted for you.

I have a 2010 diesel VX, 145000km It's an absolute pleasure to drive. Out on the open road I get about 6.6L/100km. Town it goes up to about 9l/100km

Q3? Never mind, scrap that idea. Can't believe they don't offer the 2.0 TDI in South Africa any more.

I've just bought a Kia Sportage Diesel Tec, pdc, panoramic sunroof, leather with heated front seats drivers seat heated and cooling, power drivers seat, keyless entry, Bluetooth all standard.

Problem for you would be that it is automatic, worth looking at though.

Did you take any extended service plans?
if not are you still servicing at Toyota?
servicing costs in general, in or out of service plan?

they have the 2.0TDi quattro which is auto, and starting at R550 000 seems ridiculous
Not sure I would consider an Audi again.

Thanks, Not ready to switch to auto just yet, but will have a look.
how is the fuel consumption on your diesel?

+1

Nissan Qashqai, Mazda CX-5, upcoming Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tuscon

Mazda CX-5 was one of the first cars I was looking at, also has an issue where only the petrol versions
are in manual and diesels are only in automatic.
have not looked at the Nissan Qashqai/Hyundai//kia yet. thanks.

In my current searching I have seen many manufacturers that have diesel models abroad
that are not available in SA. I think it is Subaru who currently does not offer any diesel engine
on any of their cars/suv's in SA.
The same goes for the transmission, abroad manufacturers offer auto and manual, but in SA
just have the Auto option.

I would choose any of these before the RAV4. The RAV4 was a nice looking vehicle when it came out, now it is the ugliest thing on the road.

Agreed. And that money for a Rav when there are better options for the same money

Only had the car for 3 days, open road driving 7.5l and city around 9l, traffic sucks in Cape Town at the moment - sit in traffic for roughly 4 hours a day

Much better than my IX35 which sat at just over 12l.

Subaru does offer diesel engines in their SUV's. Hope you have deep pockets.

Yes I did. I still service at Toyota. Service is from about R1800 to R4500.

They charge R600 for a pollen filter at every service. Crazy

Just an update to the thread.
Finally been to the dealer, they can add the leather seats and cruise control as extras.
leather seats are about R10000, and cruise control R4000.
