Yet to be named. 210bhp (over 155kw).

Here's the good news: Toyota will finally break back into the hot hatch scene with a new Yaris boasting at least 157kW of turbocharged power. But here’s the bad: It definitely won’t be coming to South Africa.

Nevertheless, it’s good to know that the Japanese brand accused of erring on the side of conservatism with recent models, is willing to get spicy again. Not since the Run-X RSi of 2003 has Toyota made a hatch with more than 100kW (one locally-created Auris TRD aside), so this is a ballsy move for a company with a huge lineup of vanilla-flavoured cars.

The hot new Yaris, which will be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March, is borne of Toyota’s new Gazoo factor and will almost certainly incorporate some of track-based technologies.

Two years ago Toyota united all of its official racing teams under one Gazoo-labelled umbrella, and besides its LMP1 class Le Mans effort and the South African-based Dakar bakkie squad, it’ll also compete in this year’s World Rally Championship with a gravel-chucking Yaris WRC. We suspect the road-going version will at least share a 1.6-litre engine capacity with its roll-caged sibling.

Based on these two pictures, the yet-to-be-named turbo Yaris was clearly inspired by the WRC version, with very similar black, red and white livery. Toyota’s not saying much else about the newcomer yet, other than that it’ll be a three-door variant and will be launched alongside the rest of a revised Yaris range – which will be headed our way later this year.

High-performance Toyota Yaris revealed

Toyota has revealed the upcoming high-performance variant of the Yaris, and confirmed that the car will make its debut at the Geneva motor show

The Toyota Yaris hot hatch has been revealed, ahead of its confirmed debut at the Geneva motor show in spring.

It's still yet to be officially named, but it's expected that the Ford Fiesta ST rival will take the 'Gazoo' name of Toyota's rallying outfit. The car has been confirmed to produce more than 210bhp, though, which would make it one of the more powerful offerings in the small hot hatch segment today.

Toyota wouldn't specify which engine would power the car, but a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine is more likely than the 1.6-litre displacement which many cars in this segment have; the 1.6 will be reserved for the rally car only, so the 1.5-litre is a better fit logistically for the car. It's also expected to be front-wheel drive, despite the four-wheel drive setup more associated with rallying.

The class average 0-62mph time is between 6.5sec and 7.0sec, although the car's extra power could mean that a time of nearer to 6.0sec could be possible.

Despite other cars in the class turning to five-door only body styles, the hot Yaris will be offered as a three-door only, and the Yaris itself will get both body styles. The hot hatch also spearheads the rest of the Yaris range, so in unveiling this model, the new Yaris has also been unmasked.

The hot Yaris remains true to the sketch released by Toyota upon the car's announcement, with coloured graphics on the sides of the car, large, black-coloured alloys and a black boot spoiler. There's also a large central exhaust integrated into the rear bumper, and aggressive front styling, which will likely be toned down for non-sporting Yarises. The reveal does confirm that the Yaris will adopt the distinctive manga-cartoon styling of the Aygo model, with an adapted version of its X motif across the fascia.

The model will rival a growing number of hot hatches and regular superminis, with the advent of a new Volkswagen Polo and its GTI variant, ever-rumoured Nissan Micra Nismo, and new Ford Fiesta, along with the Fiesta ST.

When I saw the thread title I was like ja ja "performance" version my ass.

But 155kw is pretty damn ludicrous in a Yaris.

155kw in a 3 door Yaris is healthy, keen to see real world performance figures once it hits the road.

That looks really good! Would love to take one for a spin

Late last year, Toyota released a teaser sketch of its upcoming Yaris hot hatch. And now the Japanese automaker has revealed the first official images of the high-performance hatchback.

Although the brand has yet to confirm the official badge that the range-topping Yaris will wear, it is widely expected to include the word “Gazoo”.

The new model will make its official debut at the Geneva International Motor Show in March, where it will be displayed alongside the new Yaris WRC, ushering in an update for the entire Yaris range.

Toyota says the hot hatch will be based on the three-door body style and that its yet-to-be-revealed (but likely 1,6-litre turbo) engine will make in excess of 155 kW. The images show bold body graphics, wider taillights, a central-exit exhaust and a cheeky rear spoiler.

The Yaris hot hatch will do battle with the likes of the 134 kW Ford Fiesta ST and 141 kW Volkswagen Polo GTI.

Toyota is making a rally-inspired Yaris hot hatch

Hurrah! The Toyota hot hatch is back, with more than 210bhp promised

This, internet, is a Toyota Yaris hot hatchback. Those of you of a certain age may be whooping with delight at the high-revving Yaris T-Sport getting its long overdue successor. The rest of you might be slightly surprised that such a sensible car is getting a fast version.

With Toyota entering the monster Yaris WRC into the 2017 World Rally Championship, though, a road-going version makes perfect sense.

Sadly, the car you see here loses the almighty aero kit of the WRC car, and will almost certainly bin the rear driveshafts and be front- rather than four-wheel driven. But there are some neat little alloys, a subtle spoiler and a central exhaust pipe.

Toyota has confirmed the car will produce ‘more than 210bhp’, too. We’re hoping that doesn’t mean 211bhp. Nonetheless, such shameless teasing would still make it one of the most powerful cars in its class, ahead of the Ford Fiesta ST, Peugeot 208 GTI and Mini Cooper S, if not quite the mad Mini John Cooper Works.

It’s expected to be called the Yaris Gazoo, after Toyota’s rally team, to further echo the WRC car. More details will land between now and the hot Yaris’s unveil at the Geneva motor show in March. We should know its engine size, top speed, 0-60mph time, and all the other key stats we need from a performance car. Let’s hope it has a traditional manual gearbox, too.

Those with the most technical anoraks will have spotted this is also a sneaky preview of an update for the Yaris range as a whole, too, with new lights front and rear clothing better chassis bits beneath. You probably aren’t bothered about that. But you should be bothered about the Fiesta ST potentially – finally – getting duffed up by a rival.

Toyota’s proved it can do fun cars with the GT86, here’s hoping there’s a bit of magic leftover to sprinkle onto this…

As a person who drives a "warm" hatch I am pleased that Toyota will finally be joining the party. However that much power on such a small wheel base... no thanks. corners will not be fun. I prefer a bigger wheel base.

That's like a Mk1 Cortina with a supercharged Big six of bygone years. Lots of power, no road-holding and braking like a train....non existing control. :D

SORRY, TOYOTA FANS: HOT YARIS ISN’T COMING TO SA…

Last week, Toyota took the wraps off its upcoming Yaris hot hatch, revealing that its turbocharged heart would make in excess of 155 kW. But it turns out the as-yet-unnamed high-performance hatchback will not be coming to South Africa.

A member of Toyota South Africa Motors’ communications team confirmed to CARmag.co.za that the hot Yaris is “not on the cards” for SA.

The reason? Well, it seems the Japanese automaker’s local arm will simply not be able to bring in the three-door hatchback at a competitive enough price.

The new model will make its official debut at the Geneva International Motor Show in March, where it will usher in an update for the entire Yaris range.

And this revised line-up is expected to arrive in South Africa by June 2017 – sadly sans the performance flagship.

New Toyota Yaris 1.5-litre features advanced exhaust cooling system

Four-cylinder will replace the 1.33-litre unit, and it could spawn the basis for a turbocharged version to power the hot Gazoo model

The Toyota Yaris has gained a new 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine that will offer better performance and fuel economy than the 1.33-litre it will replace. It could also form the base for a more powerful turbocharged unit that will feature in a Toyota Gazoo hot hatch.

The four-cylinder engine produces up to 110bhp and 100lb ft of torque, which is 12bhp and 30lb ft more than the outgoing motor. This added potency enables a 1.5-litre Yaris to accelerate from 0-62mph in 11sec, which is 0.8sec quicker than the 1.33-litre car. It can also power from 50-75mph in 17.6sec – the old model took 18.8sec.

No fuel consumption figures have been released, but Toyota’s claim for a 12% improvement equates to an average economy figure of about 64.5mpg. The old 1.33-litre offered 57.6mpg.

Toyota’s new engine meets Euro6 emissions standards and has been engineered to achieve a 38.5% thermal efficiency value, which ranks it at the sharp end of its class. The unit’s high 13.5:1 compression ratio, cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system and extended variable valve timing operation, which can switch it from the Otto to the Atkinson cycle, are listed as significant contributions to the boosted efficiency.

Toyota Supra to be launched under Gazoo performance brand

Toyota's 2018 hybrid sports car will be the halo product of its newly launched performance division; more Gazoo hybrids will come later

Toyota will launch its 2018 Supra under the name of its newly launched road performance arm, Gazoo.

The boss of Gazoo Racing, Koei Saga, told Autocar at the Monte Carlo Rally, where Toyota was fielding its new Yaris WRC cars, that producing such a halo hybrid model was a 'dream' of his. He also suggested that Gazoo’s road car team was already making use of the brand’s racing hybrid powertrain technology.

Saga refrained from revealing what Gazoo’s range-topping model would be, but earlier inside information has suggested that the Supra was already planned to be launched under the Gazoo monker. Whether or not this will be as the Gazoo Supra or Toyota Supra Gazoo isn't yet known.

Saga suggested that more hybrid Gazoo models were on the cards in the future by emphasising the importance of hybrid powertrains to his division. He cited Gazoo Racing’s hybrid motorsport models, which include its World Endurance Championship LMP1 racer and hybrid-V8 Prius that competes in Japan’s Super GT 300 class.

The first production Gazoo model to be sold in Europe will be a hot version of the Yaris hatchback. Set to be revealed at the Geneva motor show in March, it is expected to have a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that’ll produce more than 210bhp. The car will be available as a three-door only.

Saga hinted that a plan to launch more roadgoing Gazoo models in Europe after this was already in place. When asked if he wanted a full range of Gazoo models to be produced for the market, he said “of course”.
