Hey guys,

I need some help connecting up my TP-link TL MR3220 wireless router to my standard (not the billion one) telkom router. I've connected the tp-link router via its WAN port to a lan port on the Telkom router. I'm just unsure of what settings to use on both routers.

I basically want to disable the wireless on the telkom router and use the TPlink router as the wireless.

Any help would be hugely appreciated

Do you want the telkom router inaccessible from the wireless network entirely?

The answer will determine your configuration steps

Set TP Link (under internet access to Wan preferred, 3g as back up), set access type to dynamic. On adsl modem switch off/disable wireless. Ensure that when you do changes you are connected by wire. You have to access the TP Link interface page, save changes and then access router interface page, save changes.

Ya I only want the TP-link router to be used for wireless access.

@ TonyA - So I don't need to use static ip's ect when connecting the two routers?

No I've got the Billion set as the DHCP server and it works just fine allocating the PC's an address. 2 are setup with permant addresses using the TP Link set up page.

Here's what you do then:

Give both routers IP addresses on the same subnet like 10.0.0.2 and 10.0.0.3
Disable wireless on the Telkom
Connect cable between the two routers in LAN ports rather than the WAN port
Configure wireless on TP-Link

That way you're using it like a Wireless AP rather than a seperate internal gateway which you are doing now

Lol. But using the TP-link as a gateway would that not slow the connection when compared to using it as an internal gateway?

Would ad an extra link in the chain that could fail, you'd do that if you ran an internet cafe type setup where you don't want them accessing the actual routers/network ( creating a guest network in effect )

Your easiest config leaves telkom as the internet gateway and the TP-link merely as a wireless bridge to it

Well ultimately I'm looking to use the TP-link as the only wireless signal in the house but I also want to connect the two routers so that I get the fastest connection speed possible...

"Fastest connection speed"

Wireless speed?

Well I mean what configuration will give me the fastest connection eg from pc to router to second router WAN way or your way ? :)

Why would you want to use the Telkom router for your adsl. the TP-Link will give you better and more stable connection.

Here's what you do then:

Also remember to turn off the DHCP server on the TP-Link if you do this.
