Hi

I have the TP link deco mesh at my house. I have two of the M3W plugs and two M4 bases scatted across the house.

While the signal in the house is quite decent, I want to install a smart doorbell which is a few meters from the nearest deco unit. Any suggestion on how to work around this? I see there is an outdoor unit but not available locally.

Have you tested the connection strength at the site of the doorbell? 2.4ghz which most IoT devices connect to usually has longer range than 5ghz . How far the the installation point from the wifi unit? You should also be able to boost the output of the 2.4ghz radio

Its probably like 10-15m. I did a speed test, where it's about 10% of the speed when I am next to the router

What is the speed you get.

Also, big difference between 10m and 15m.

At 10m 2.4Ghz could be OK, at 15 maybe not, also depends what is in the way.

Also generally IoT devices don't mind speed it's more about the latency and signal strength. But yes having more speed is never bad.

Indeed.

He did not give detail about the smart doorbell either.

If it is just a doorbell, as long as it gets signal should be OK.
If it has a camera as well, different kettle of fish.

It’s a blink video doorbell
They claim it only needs 2mbps and the doorbell location gets about 20mbps of my 200mbps line

The extended is in a plug near the front door. So basically a window and then almost a straight line of of garden to the gate

Is it possible to put a router in waterproof box for outside?
Probably not ideal for signal strength... but yes it's possible

Alternative / best practise would be to get an outdoor rated access point

Definitely first choice but seems hard to find a deco outdoor

Not a Deco but still in the TP Link family. Connect it up to one of the Deco's lan ports

FYI, if you wanted to, you can flash some Decos with OpenWRT.
Did my M4s, and it unlocks a new world of possibility.
