I got a adsl line today and went into telkom shop to sign up for TI. I got my username and temp password by sms but can’t connect. Been on the phone with them for a while, but no help. They say my line is syncing. Can someone please help me with the correct settings for the tp-link td 8817.

I know they say you're syncing but there is no harm in double checking. The first thing you need to check is that the ADSL LED on the modem is on, not flashing. If it's off or flashing it means it's not sync'd.

I assume you know how to connect to the modem but if not, you need to connect a LAN cable from your PC to modem and setup your PC's IP so that the default gateway and DNS is 192.168.1.1 and your local IP address should be 192.168.1.2 or something like that. You can login to configure your modem by browsing to 192.168.1.1. TP-Link usually include a Setup Wizard / Quick Setup option in their modems, find this option on the home screen and select it.

Follow the prompts and ensure you select the following settings:

- Connection Type: PPPoE/PPPoA
- Username: Username provided by telkom e.g. [email protected]
- Password: Provided by Telkom
- VPI: 8
- VCI: 35
- Connection: LLC or PPPoE LLC

Once complete, it should do a test to see if you're connected to the internet. This should take a few mins, so be patient. Once connected, the Internet LED on the modem will light up. And voila, you're connected to the net :D

No luck, ADSL LED stays on, meaning it's syncing as far as I know, but I get nothing after running the quick start. Status page says Down next to PVC4, which has the telkom settings. Not getting an ip address.

So I got a free Axxess acount to test as well, but still nothing. Went ahead and bought a new modem, still nothing. All the feedback I get from 10210 is that they think I have not correctly set up my modem.

Luckily the Telkom tech gave me his cell number, and I asked him to come and have a look. At the end it was some or other issue at the exchange. Got internet now!

Check if you can browse www.telkom.co.za if you chose self install if I remember correctly you have to activate the line there.
