Gents,

I'm left scratching my head over a few issues i'm having with a new network setup. I had an old billion router that needed to be restarted more than once a day, so i decided to buy a new wireless ADSL router. Settled on a TP-Link unit and buy mistake ordered the TL-WR1043ND which does not have an ADSL modem. Upon realizing this I yank an old Telkom MEGA ADSL modem/router/ap out the cupboard and set that up for the ADSL.

So my setup is...

MEGA network port connected to TP Link WAN port. TP-Link setup for DHCP WAN connection. All the TP-Link wireless and wired clients do get internet connection but with soooo many problems. I seem to have DNS issues and slow speeds. Connection is very unstable and its driving me nuts.

Should configure this setup another way? PPPoe?

Any advice.....i'm going nuts here!

I would use a cross-over cable between LAN ports, then set the default/static route on the mega as the ip of the TP, set TP to be dhcp relay.

Cool, will try the cross over but what do you mean "default/static route" on the mega?

Are you saying get the mega to DHCP within the TP link range and then get the TP link to relay the DHCP?

i.e mega on 10.0.0.2 with DHCP settings of 192.160.50 - 192.168.0.100
TP Link on 192.168.0.1 relaying the Mega's DHCP

????

Rather set the MEGA in bridging mode, and let the TP-Link do all the work, DHCP, PPPoE, etc, etc

It's easier if they're on the same subnet...

Give the TP an address of 10.0.0.1, set DHCP to relay to 10.0.0.2
Set TP static route: Destination: 0.0.0.0, netmask:0.0.0.0 , default gateway:10.0.0.2

Leave the Mega as DHCP as 10.0.0.2, set DHCP server range 10.0.0.3 - 10.0.0.100
Set mega static route: Destination: 10.0.0.0, netmask: 255.255.255.0 gateway: 10.0.0.1

Seriously, try the bridging approach first. It's a LOT simpler than Broadcom's suggested solution. Still use a crossover cable between the WAN port and one of the LAN ports of the MEGA, your TP-Link sends PPPoE frames to the MEGA, the MEGA does "translation" between Ethernet and ADSL only, and puts them onto the phone line.

Net result: your TP-Link is responsible for everything other than the ADSL-Ethernet bridge, the MEGA handles that and justs gets out of the way otherwise.

The only downside is that you cannot generally access the ADSL stats on the MEGA, since there is no route to reach the MEGA's web interface.

Thanks guys! I will try the recommendations. I just cant put the MEGA & TP on the same subnet, the TP wont allow it. Will try the bridging and cross over cable. cheers!
