TP Link separate modem and router setup

X gamer, if you connect a device to one of the routers ethernet ports, how does that device get its IP address? From the modem?

I'm confused now...

Probably too late now, but yeah. DHCP is on the DSL Modem (I'm using the 4 port DSL modem/router. TD8840T) .

And yes, Xera explained it better: The router has a WAN and a LAN ip, which need to be on different ranges. That's where you'll get a problem (as I did, because I wanted all my devices to appear on the same network regardless if they were connected to the DSL router, or the Wifi router on the other side of the house.)

How far did you get?

Well my setup is working as it was before.

Basically, my modem is on a different subnet to the router (still don't get why this has to be the case for it to work but anyways) and the router is dishing out IPs to everything (i.e. DHCP is on the router).

have you got DHCP disabled on the modem

I've been trying to configure my new WDR4300 with my modem (tp link 8817) but keep having endless hassles with the router suddenly preventing internet access to my devices after about 18 hrs

Yup, DHCP is disabled on the modem side.

Post a screenshot of your WAN settings page on the WDR4300 so we can have a look.

Also, have you tried DD-WRT?

Will be playing round with it tonight so will do so then, thanks

TP-Link TD-8840T and Archer C7 marriage.

Ok, time for me to chirp in also.

I HAD a Netgear DGN2200... mother nature took it to the big silicon box upstairs (At R1600 each, replaced multiple times now).

Decided I'm going to split the ADSL from the Wifi side, let mother nature take a cheaper ADSL router (R350), and leave the more expensive Wifi alone.

So bought: TP-Link: TD-8840T Router and a TP-Link: Archer C7 Wifi unit.

I've configured:

The router onto
IP:192.168.0.1,
DHCP range starting at 192.16.8.2,
GW 192.168.0.1
Router and Wifi is interconnected via the WAN port,
Archer Wifi configure with
Static IP of 192.168.0.2
DHCP range of 192.168.1.2+ and
GW also as 192.168.0.1

With this setup I'm able to connect to the Wifi network/SSID created, access Archer via its static IP:192.168.0.2 and manage the Wifi, I'm also able to connect via the Wifi/Archer onto the static IP:192.168.0.1 which is the IP assigned to the ADSL router.

Comments: I was thinking I would prefer to have the Router run DHCP and get all clients, wire connect to either router or Wifi or Wifi connect to the Archer to have the same IP range.

I believe I can accomplish this by connecting the WiFi onto the router via one of the 4 RG45 ports and then disabling DHCP on the Wifi, thoughts?

atm, anything wire connected gets a 192.168.0.* and all Wifi clients end on the 192.168.1.* network.

Question, I got the SSID on the 2.5 GHz and the 5.0 GHz using the same SSID, should I worry, might I have problems?

Question, who else has the TD-8840T, please share settings for Telkom, it seems the basic thinking I had is not wanting to work, wondering if I missed anything.
