Track pad - what's the difference between the mouse buttons above and below?

I have a Dell laptop with three buttons above the track pad and two below. There's a difference with the left button on the buttons above and the ones below. It appears to be like a left click (above), but it doesn't always work the same - for example, if I click any text in the browser, it selects the whole word with a single click (behaves like a double-click). A double click behaves like three successive clicks and selects the entire para / sentence. Anyone know how to make the three buttons above behave exactly like the two below?

Usually there is a mouse/trackpad icon on the bottom right that has some settings. If you don't have that try installing the trackpad drivers again.

the extra buttons on the top are for using that "stick" thingy in the middle of the keyboard,

some find that easier than using a touchpad,

That's exactly how a normal mouse works.

Nah...
Click once on any word on this page and you'll see it doesn't select the word. Double click will do that.

Now as I post that... suddenly it starts behaving like a normal left button. Single click doesn't select the whole word - double click does (as it should). I have no idea what changed... ugh. I'll post here when I figure it out.
