track stolen blackberry

Hey guys, is it possible to track a bb after it has been stolen? a friend of mine had a house robbery and they stole all the cell phones(2 bb's).

1 of the bb had bb protect but when we try using it, it does not work. or is it possible to get a service provider to have the phones traced, even if it is just their last location.

we really need to get them traced as this was an attempted murder situation where my friend got shot in the chest so if we get the phones we hopefully get them

What do you mean "it does not work?" What does it do?

AS far as I know you can get a service provider to trace them, but they can pretty much only do so with the SIM and a police instruction. If the guys took out the SIM then I don't think they can track the phone any more (while BB protect theoretically can).

well I didn't do it myself, from what they say I believe they cannot pick up where the phone is... so I thought that they(the ***holes) either wiped the phone clean or bb protect does not work when the phone is switched off.

cant they trace the phone through the imei? the sim cards are probably thrown away
