Hi all

Spoke with the dealer regarding a battery issue and he said that the tracking device installed on the car is an issue.

Apparently it's powered off the battery with a passive draw of 0.25 (amps?).

Is this normal? is the power draw too high? clueless here

Thanks in advance!

Yep, happened on our A3 as well.

Basically the tracking unit's battery lasts for about 3 years, then dies. Then the tracking unit starts draining the main battery.

Solution: replace the tracking unit battery every 2 years, costs around R100, will save you having to buy a new battery prematurely.

A few manufactures will now void your warranty if you have a tracking system installed that is wired into the car's harness. Just get a battery operated unit fitted.

Grim, the tracking unit must be connected to the battery, so that it triggers if someone tries to take the battery out to steal the car

Only if you want that functionality. I just have the unit installed as it saves me money on my insurance, in all honesty I don't want my car back if it gets stolen, I've seen what stolen cars look like.

One of my mate's Citi Golf was nearly stolen in November, nearly R20k worth of damage to the car.

Also using Tracetec now. VW warned me with my Golf 6 that if I have a Tracker / Netstar installed and I get ANY wiring / electronic issues, it will not be covered by warranty (either immediately or a year later).

Had a Netstar in my Golf 5 and in the 4 years I had the car, battery was replaced 3 times I think.

Yes it happens. I had a battery drain issue on my BMW. First thing the dealer looked at was the Tracking device. Fortunately I use Tracetec :)

Got the Main Battery Discharge notification last night. It seems my battery is at risk... I wonder whether Tracker will charge me to have the device removed
