I am about to buy a new vehicle. The dealer said they could install a tracking device into the car. I would be responsible for getting a tracking contract with a tracking company and make the monthly payments.

* Do you get a tracking unit that is compatible with all the tracking companies?
* Which, in your opinion, is the best tracking company & why?
* What can I expect to pay for a monthly subscription?
* If i install a tracker would i have to press an anti-hijack type of butten whenever I want to drive anywhere?

I cannot get this vehicle insured if I don't get a tracking device installed.

Just tell him you'll get the device from the tracking company...10/1 his going to overcharge you on the device!

I think you pay as little as R99 for the basic Netstart Sleuth... installation costs I'm uncertain, but check their website. And no, it is not an anti-hijack system so you don't need to press any buttons. The panic button ones are more expensive & advanced. I know tracker say they don't do panic buttons because they get people killed.

Remember South Africa's car hijackers are quite advanced and will probably find & remove the unit at the point of hijack (my friend was hijacked by guys who had one of those locator units that beep when there's a tracker on the car). So just get the basic for insurance purposes & in the unfortunate case of a real hijack, just make sure you get away with your life & worry about phoning tracker when safe.

I'll get a R130 discount if I get a tracking unit installed. Netstar Sleuth = R109.00
