Who does it? How do you do it?

Using an excel doc built by a friend. Pretty nifty. Can see that I average almost 11l/100km for city driving, which goes all the way down to 7.6l/100km on long distance. 2001 Golf IV GTI.

I have always done it and keep my own figures in a log book, but this past 9 months I have started tracking my consumption on Fuelly, and it is a piece of cake. Just add fuel used plus mileage done and it works everything out for you. It also shows graphs of your consumption so you can quickly pick up any problems before they become a HUGE one..

Here's my "Fuelly Dashboard". Easy enough to join.

That address should take you to my main page, but I'm not sure what happens if you aren't logged in as me.

Here's another link to one of my cars. http://www.fuelly.com/driver/paulc/legacy-outback

Yup, I'm registered on fuelly as well (same nic as here), but haven't used it in years.

I was still driving an Uno at that stage.

Been meaning to move the excel file info across, but what a las.

I do it as well. I use an app on my Android phone called FuelLog. It is pretty nifty. It can also graph your fuel consumption, cost per fillup, etc.

I find it very useful because I can enter all the data while they petrol attendant is throwing in the good stuff.

I make a note while the attendant brings my change, then I enter it in Excel. I have a log going all the way back to January 2007.

For iphone users Kilofuel is also a great choice. Not only does it track fuel usage, give reports on average consumption, cost per km, etc but it even shows you which vendor's fuel gives you the best consumption.

Because it's a good idea to actually know what your consumption is and whether all is right with your car.

At 12.2 l/100, I would definitely either be looking at a tune up or looking at altering my driving style...:p

It could certainly help you of the tests were done under controll cercumstaces. But we all know how this works.

Exactly.

Why indeed...
Will it help you save 13 cents more at the next refill. Will it give you bragging rights at the next braai ????
See above.

When you're doing this, you're not interested in absolute values, but a trend. If my consumption suddenly goes south, I can compare it to the previous years and see whether it's within limits for that time of year.

The tests are controlled enough for me. I do full tank to full tank, and I've been doing this since I first started driving about 40 years before you were born....
