After getting rather a shock from my usage stats for the first couple of days of the month - i installed the "traffic control and reporting" addon to my IPcop...

My win2k machine is now managing to use up it 30MB daily limit in less than an hour - while its IDLE!!!!
I've disable windows update and everything else i could find - but it hasn't solved the problem. What software could i use to log all the connections on the machine to find out what process is chewing up my cap?

Download Spybot search and destroy, sounds like you may have some spyware. Also get a decent AV with latest definitions and check for viruses.

You can also use something called Active Ports to see whats sending out the data

AV was running but i just did a full system scan - there was a viral Java app that i have now deleted.

Spybot - can't run on the machine until it gets uncapped in the morning so i can dnload update files.

But now the crunch - fess up you sneaky bugger!!
Who owns the dynamic DNS address local1.servegame.com ?!?!?!
Its currently pointing at:
Name: c1-116-5.ndn.isadsl.co.za
Address: 196.209.4.116

cause my IE proxy settings are pointing there... WTF - i don't remember setting that ever

LOL - Sneaky sneaky.
I knew IS did some automatic settings.
If you don't like it - turn off Automatically Detect Settings in IE and then disable the proxy.
Tools -> Options -> Connections Tab -> LAN Settings button...

The proxy will only be used when you use IE or most other MS internet related products like Outlook and MSN Messanger and it will not cause the 50MB problem you've got.

It wasn't on auto detect - it was hard settings... and its not an IS server - its and ADSL user!!!
And i wasn't even connected to my IS account when the trouble started...

The irony of the thing is that i don't even use IE - my FF is fine :D

But you right - that wont really affect my main problem
