So say a criminal steals my phone. Inserts another sim card, which is his, with authentic (RICA) details, by chance I happen to get his number. So can't I locate/trace him with/via RICA? How do I go about doing that?

So you can't do it yourself without police being involved? Ask some authority or figure? Cause reason I ask, it's nothing related to crime, I want to find out who owns a certain number.

Use social engineering. Technically only law enforcement has access to the RICA database. I'm sure there are a couple of corrupt people that also have access. So either involve the police, find one of those corrupt people, or call the number from a friend's phone to find out who it is. Why don't you just post the number here?

Just phone the guy and make as if you are some tele marketer, or somebody doing market research, no mess, no fuss, and it is not illigal.
For better sucsess, get a female friend with a very sexy voice to make the call :)

Make sure that you have your phones IMEI number. If the sim is swapped you will still be able to trace your phone with the IMEI number as this is unique to the phone.

Their are agencies that can trace it for you but they come at a price. For just a normal trace you are looking at around R3,000.

Guys let me tell you, I had a very interesting chat today, no no at a braai Ghoti ;), RICA is a complete failure. You can purchase as many RICA's sims as you want.
I will not say where or from who but I know FOR FACT Crime Intelligence / National Intelligence are investigating but cannot stop it.
The only people laws affect are honest citizens. Criminals will always find a way.
Same with guns, same with phones, same with everything

I disagree, Ockie can confirm, but you can only have 99 Registered RICA sim cards on your name per service provider AFAIK.

I have also heard this from a very reliable source. RICA is a total mess. Its essentially a database of all the honest mobile phone users, nothing more and definitely not the 'crime fighting/busting' tool it was made out to be.

Sounds so familiar when you think of it......

Will work wonders IF the person only have one name.... Need another green ID? Up until recently you could almost order it online

I was on holiday about a year ago when I needed a sim card so I went to a local side street cell phone agent and bought a sim card. Seeing I didn't have my residence proof with me the guy pulled out one from a drawer and gave it to me and told me it was already rica'd.

Later when I attempted to register online to check balances etc it failed so I cut it up and dumped it and got another one.

You can disagree until the cows come home, its happening and the pre ricad sims have no details on them, they come up blank.
Now explain to me how this is happening?

This is FACT. This was a failure from the start and as usual the authorities did not listen.
I wont go into too much detail but I know of 1 x number that this has happened with already
I know where it was RICAD but no details appear on the system

I articulated incorrectly what I was saying. I meant to say you can legally only RICA 99 sim cards per network, per person. I am not disagreeing that you can get pre-rica'd sims or that it's a farce, or that it will be used illegally and no one can stop it.

Cool, no worries. Its a bloody mess. The system only targets law abiding citizens, REAL criminals will always find a way.

I don't don't mean to meddle, but what is "bad stuff", and how old are you?
