STFU!!!! Is it really necessary to start poking them???
COSATU's busy imploding if you haven't noticed.
NUM is very outspoken about Zola Tsotsi's shenanigans at Eskom.
Also a bit of a fsckup between AMCU and NUM at Northam Platinum.
I haven't. what's the beef there?
Also, would it not be better for trade union independence if they were separated from govt. influence? ie, no tripartite alliance? or are these alliances common place around the world?
What I'm trying to say is - surely there is conflict of interest and not acting in their members best interest?
Not really. They want the political influence. It's a marriage of mutual benefit. They want a say in politics (and threaten the ANC with votes if they don't listen) and the ANC wants the votes.
It will be better for the rest of the country if they were to split, but they need each other.
but are they using their political influence to protect and enhance their members interests?
That's certainly what they tell their membersD). Remember, to a large extent it's about status and prestige for the leadership of the unions. For many years it was a stepping stone into a more senior ANC/Government position.
And sometimes they (the members) will actually benefit, with things like wage negotiations and input on labour/economic policy.
