Those people who connect to XBOX live, what is the cheapest ADSL offering with an acceptable speed when playing XBOX Live. Further more on average how many MB would it take to say: play a 1 hour session of Halo 3?

So the line rental from tekom for the 384 KB/s is R245 and i'm thinking of either the 1GIG or 3GIG offrengs from Web Africa. I'm planning on spending about 20 hours a month on XBOX Live. Can Anybody advise me on a good ISP? I know you get a month for free on XBOX live when purchasing an XBOX, so it would be a good time to test it. I know it's a lot of questions, but it will help me and possibly others.

I use an ADSL 384kb through WebAfrica and use about 2 gigs per month... I don't know how much Halo uses but GEars of War used about 20mb and hour..

Rather get your line rental direct from Web Africa as well, shaped access is perfect for local play

There is no local live, he's thinking PC. Go for SAIX over IS for a better latency. Don't pay more for unshaped when using live unless you're really serious, 20ms faster latency is not gonna help when your latency is already 300ms. 1 gig should be fine, for a monopoly ran country that is.

Use the 1 month thing to get a good idea, you either love it or you don't.

That makes sense. And by SAIX I take it you mean Telkom.
I think I'll rent a 384KB/s line from Telkom then, and go for Web Africa's
1 GIG shaped.

I think the latency should be less if you play against locals, I think that's what he meant. BTW, how well does the headset work? does the sound also come out OK?

Yeah the sound comes out perfectly fine, providing you don't fiddle with it so that it the earphone sits awkwardly on your ear. I have had that loads of time, just to find out I had twisted the headset a little to the side.

Here are some stats for games:

Gears of War:
-------------

Host (8 Players with Voice data) - 150MB to 200MB per hour.
Client (With Voice data) - 20MB to 30MB per hour.

Halo 3:
-------

Halo 3 is a P2P based game. Which means everyone pools their bandwidth together and the lines then try to compensate for everyone else. Obviously the more players in a lobby the greater the bandwidth usage. It really gets scary when you have the full 16 players in a lobby, though it is hardly possible to get 16 unless all are on the full 4Mbit lines.

Here are some references:

8 Players with Voice data - 25MB to 35MB per hour.
16 Players with Voice data - 55MB to 75MB per hour.

Forza Motorsport 2
------------------

Also P2P based. Max players allowed in one lobby unless specified by "lobby master", is 8.

8 Players with Voice data - 40MB to 60MB per hour.

Line Rental has come down, it's R149 now (384)

When we connect with local players there are very little latency. The only thing that Live does is that you log in to authenticate, but once you connect to other players it is p2p and local. If you get lag then it will be from local players who use a wireless connection like iburst or their little sister is on facebook on the same line.

Once you start playing local your friendslist will be full in no time and you will always get a game during week nights.

@Iceman

Use Cybersmart oneprice, firstly they're the cheapest (R269 for 3Gb/384 line and bandwidth) and secondly, I can't tell you because I've been sworn to secrecy ;) but just trust me - Cybersmart oneprice.

 Promise, we won't tell anyone. Are they going to upgrade the 384 to 512?
