Yesterday while at a busy intersection my wife (who was driving) entered the intersection while the light was green. So then suddenly traffic slows down dramatically and abouit 6 or 8 cars are caught in the middle of nowhere-land in the intersection while the light changed from orage to red.

Then the camera flashes a bazillion times.

Does one get a fine for this sort of thing? Its not like we could really help it.

the camera needs to demonstrate that the vehicle was crossing the line and moving into the intersection under a red light

Pretty sure being stationary in a junction is an offence too. Especially if it's a box junction.

6.1.3The photograph/image shall at least record the following for TLVME:

(a)date of offence;

(b)time of offence;

(c)the yellow interval time of the traffic light preceding the red-light time;

(d)the elapsed red-light time at time of the photograph/image;

(e)a view of the whole width of the traffic lane(s) and intersection;

(f)at least one functioning traffic light must be visible in the photograph / image indicating the interval of the intersection;

(g)at least two photographs/images indicating the position of the vehicle of the accused must be taken;

(h)the first image must show the vehicle entering the intersection after a delay time has lapsed at the start of the red-interval of the intersection;

(i)at least a second image taken a fixed time or distance from the first image indicating the vehicle moving through the red interval of the intersection; and

(j)the location code.

The camera won't flash unless you cross the sensor strips located just before the intersection when the light is red.

That means you and a few people must have passed the sensor strips after the light was red, meaning you entered the intersection illegally as the light was red.

If you are already in the intersection and the light turns red, the camera should not flash, as you should have passed the sensor strips already.

They probably won't send you the fine as multiple offenders were doing exactly the same thing, meaning they can't prove without a doubt that your car was the only car at fault.

I thought not all camera have those. Aren't there some radar/laser based ones too?

As several people have mentioned, if your wife was already in the intersection before the light turned red they can't fine you for driving through a red traffic light.

Also, I've seen those cameras get confused before and start flashing at just about anyone driving past regardless of speed/light phase.

It's unlikely that you'll receive a fine.

Usually red light camera's use piezo strips in the road surface as they can measure the precise moment when the light turns red and whether your vehicle has crossed the white line.

I see. Thanks.
