I was in a small accident on 17 December in Somerset West where a car rear ended a car which in turn hit me from behind. I was driving my sons car and my license was in my own car, so, I was issued with a ticket. Annoying and stupid of me, but fair enough.

So, the ticket says R1000 fine reduced to R500 for admission of guilt if I pay before 1 March, or appear in court on 15 March if I don't.

So, the week before Christmas, lots of time to pay, of course I forgot all about it. My intention was always to pay the R500, but in my mind I had 15 March payment date until I dug out the notice last night. Now i see the truth, pay R500 before 1 March.

Arghhhhh.

So I go to payCity web site, and it tells me...

Fine value : 1,000.00
Status : Admission-of-Guilt not allowed - Offender must go to court

So what would you do now?

Pay R500 and hope for the best?

Pay R1000 and hope for the best?

Go to court on 15 March and explain and say sorry and hope for R500?

Has anyone every gone to court for something like this? What is the likely outcome bearing in mind if I go I'm not arguing the fine, just that I'm stupid and forgot?

Just looking for advice, not smarty pant comments thanks.

Have you received a summons to appear in court?

No. The ticket says pay admission of guilt before 1 March or appear in court on 15 March.

I was going to wing it with R500 payment, but payCity website says

I'm waiting on stand by to leave the country, don't even know if I'll be here on 15th. But my preference is to pay something and hope for the best. Obviously I'd rather pay R500 and hope that works :p

The reduced payment is only if you pay it in person at traffic department ... online you have to pay full price.

Expensive lesson to learn to carry your license with you... :p

Contact the Public Prosecutor and plead your case before the 15th, they might be in a good mood and let you still pay R500 so you don't waste court time.

Lol. I ALWAYS do. And the single solitary one time I don't... :erm:

But yeah. It's a 2 hour round trip to nearest traffic dept for me (I'm in Overstrained not CT). This just complicates things even more.

I like that.

rather google "traffic court" and visit them asap. You can also plea a reduction with them prior to appearing in court.

Got the details. Yes, I think I'll drive through this morning and plead with them a little :)

Tried other sites? AARTO, FNB, Wesbank, Virtual Postoffice?

I tried FNB first as I bank with them, but I just got errors and it appears that City of CT fines can't be paid online.

Instant Summons.

I didn't go to court from the last one I got- had to pay the full fine + contempt of court fine.

Sort it out before that date!

Jibbers, that's a bummer.

But I just got off the phone with a lady in the department. She said I've got until Wednesday still on the system to pay if I go into any traffic dept. It shows as R1000 but if I want to try my luck at R500 with the PP, go to the magistrates court and try and have a word.

So I'll head through on Monday and try my luck i guess :p

Pay the R1000. Don't try to get clever - there is already a summons to appear in court. If you don't sort it out properly, and don't go to court because you think you've done enough, you could end up with a warrant of arrest issued and a contempt of court fine, and still be liable for the original R1000.
