Anyone else think they've changed this year? It's actually madness how bad it has got over night.

It's taking almost an hour to drive under 5km nowadays. I haven't even started my journey, but I'm an hour down with 33km to actually go.

I used to do the full 38km in an hour

Every year there are more people in my area. You can see new developments and the road upgrades aren't really fast enough. But most municipalities don't get enough for these kind of things in any case.

Agreed, it is a bit worse this year. Not sure if everyone is preparing for winter time or just asleep at the wheel in general.

Yep, I have to leave 15 minutes earlier these days to avoid sitting in any traffic.

Hope it's just a new year/January thing and people go back into a slump from next month :D

That's because of more incompetent drivers on the road , nothing else.

I have noticed the funniest thing recently not sure if anyone else picked up on this. New cars with the 21 days permit on the window and the L sign next to it. Driving behind a person a like this has more ups and downs than any drama series I have seen. :D I noticed that these drivers normally go for the Renault brand

Last Monday I did a trip from Edenvale to Potch & back - I left home & 06h00, arrived in Potch at 07h27 - 87 mins to do 138.9 kms.

Return trip back took 107 mins to do 138.2 kms - I left Potch at 15h30, arrived in Edenvale at 17h17 (due to the inevitable log-jam approaching the Van Buuren off-ramp) - I detoured through Bedfordview - with its gazillion speed-bumps - to escape the usual Gillooly's nightmare.

Then I had to go to Fairland in Randburg last Tuesday & Wednesday - on the Tuesday morning trip, I left home at 06h45, and got to the client at 08h00 - 75 mins to do 27.1 kms.

The return trip of 27.4 kms took the same duration - 75 mins - I left the client at 15h45 and got home at 17h00.

The Wednesday trip took 71 mins to do 26.9 kms - I left home at 06h50 and arrived at the client at 08h01.

Coming back home again took 89 mins to do 27.3 kms - I left at 15h30 and got home at 16h59 - traffic along Club Rd East, from Sandringham through Linksfield to Edenvale was crawling along at a snail's pace.

So it's actually faster to drive from Edenvale to Potch on a weekday, than is to get to Randburg, if you factor in distance travelled over duration.

Midrand to Sandton seems to be the worst. I leave the house at 6:45 and on a normal day I am at the office at 7:45, but without fail everyday there is a disruption of some sort which results in the trip being an 1h45m excursion. Mind you this is a 26km trip.

I would suggest that for the trips other than potch, you use a bicycle.

Conrad drive is a fkn nightmare. When I leave for work at 7:30 it's already backed up to Susman.

It's definitely worse.

My 5KM route used to be 9-10 minutes when we moved here in 2014. Last year it was about 15 minutes. This year, since school started again, it's not been less than 18 minutes, and this morning with the rain it was 22 minutes.

It is worse and it is going to keep getting worse until more public transport options are available.

And by that you don't mean pissant intracity public transport projects, in needs to be intercity as well, Ekurhuleni to Mogale City, Pretoria to JHB South and such trips should be possible. Gautrain is way too little.

More cars on the road every year. I now have to leave at least 05:10 in order to be at work 06:00 am.

I agree, Mondays and Fridays are especially worse and suddenly a piece of road I use to get work (Monkor), seems to have traffic in both directions nowadays.

Glad I do not do the Pretoria to Sandton commute anymore.

One week you will have a damn accident scene every single day messing up the commute badly, then the next week all smooth sailing.

I've noticed it as well. Since the start of the year it seems traffic picks up 10-15 mins earlier than before, and today suddenly it was even worse. Before long I'll have to start working at night to avoid rush hour.

Don't know about different traffic patterns on my route (Paulshof to Morningside) but construction workers have messed things up royally recently - these temporary speedbumps that bring traffic to a crawl going over them.
