Train tickets for a trip overseas

Hey forumites,

I am leaving for Italy in 2 weeks' time. Something that is really worrying me is that train tickets will get sold out. I want to know from anyone here. Is it cheaper, better to try and buy inter train city tickets now before I actually get there?

I won't be travelling on any overnight trains and what I've been hearing is that I might as well just buy it there. Any comments?
 
Just buy them there. There are dozens of trains and you just buy the tickets at the stations. No need to pre-book them...

I never went from one city to another in Italy but if it's anything like Spain, watch out for the queues on weekends.
 
I've travelled plenty on trains in Italy and they're really nothing to worry about at all. It is really cheap to fly by the way. Just watch out for the landing in Rome - it can be hairy...
 
Jip, do not buy here, you will get ripped off big time.
Buy once you there.
Look out for specials and such :)
 
Ask for advice on specific trains on places like Tripadvisor - very helpful people with plenty of local knowledge.

I agree with posters here, mostly not necessary to buy beforehand. On the odd occasion that I have bought beforehand it was always directly from the rail operator's site.
 
Just got back from Italy.
Trained all over.
If you're travelling from big city to big city (Rome->Florence, etc) then it can be much cheaper (~50%) to buy online (from trenitalia.com) now.
Otherwise, buy at the station using your credit card.

In any city in Europe, you shouldnt have a problem getting a ticket at the station(as long as its a reasonable civlised hour :D ), however, tickets for longer journeys are almost always cheaper if bought in advance and often, online ticket purchases have discount in addition.

In Italy the hour is not even important, as they have cool self-service machines (with English interfaces!) that take credit card payments. Just remember to validate your ticket before boarding the train at one of the yellow/white&green machines on the platform.
 
Just buy it there, cheaper. Took a train from Milan to Munich, that was the day that the train drivers strike.

That's patently false (in Italy, where the OP is going). It is up to 50% cheaper to buy online direct from the trenitalia.com.
I know. I did it. Last month.
 
yeah as far as I am aware, if you are travelling from major city to major city it is cheaper to buy in advance and online. However normal intercity routes should be the same price whether you pay now or later.
