Cape Town - Two trains were torched at Cape Town station in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Theo Layne told News24 that the fire department was called out at around 02:00 on Tuesday morning.

“Two trains were burnt on the platforms, and 10 coaches were damaged between the two trains,” Layne said.

“The exact cause of the blaze is still unknown and an investigation is under way.”

Layne said there were no injuries reported.

Clean-up operations would affect platforms 1 to 11, Metrorail said in a statement. A delay of between 40-60 minutes was expected on all lines.

Metrorail regional manager Richard Walker condemned the latest attack, labelling it ‘blatant’.

“This sets back our recovery programme by months and further depletes much-needed capacity for rail to meet customer demand. The latest loss brings the total number of carriages lost to fire this year to 20.”

Customers were also urged to make alternative transport arrangements until the service was full restored.

Last week, a train was set alight at Muizenberg station, News24 reported.

Three teenagers were arrested for starting the fire at Muizenberg train station. Three carriages were damaged in that incident.

Yep my train pulled in right next to the charred remains (took 2 pics attached). This kind of k@k is nothing less than sabotage, and should be treated as such. Absolutely disgusting behaviour.

Metrorail has been dishing commuters crap service and carriages, which are merely retrofitted pre-1994 Spoornet carriages, some over 60 years old. Their service levels are pathetic, their schedules are a mess, their safety record is appalling and their rolling stock are in a horrendous state of disrepair and unhygienically filthy. For over 20 years all they have done is oil squeaky wheels and done NOTHING proactive to solve the problems affecting commuters, yet they increase fares all the time. Talk of a 'recovery program' is just cheap politicking. I love the way this is framed as a convenient excuse to do nothing for a few more months. Useless knobs.

Completely agree, in the past it would have been classified as sabotage under the domestic terrorist act and treated as such.

Because this is the more expensive carriages that the "masses" do not use. Metro plus are a bit more expensive but have cushion seats(which gets cut up anyway). The normal metro carriages do have hard seats(not so easy to break).

I take these trains daily and have seen what kind of person "trek treine deur hulle gatte"!!

Just got an sms from metrorail. 5 different train sets are cancelled because of vandalism.
Now I am going to laugh my ass of because most of those vandals will now start to protest because there is no trains!!

As much as I share your anger and frustration and anger at the terrible state of the trains, I feel you are a somewhat off with your comment about the "masses". I also travel by train daily (Metro Plus) and am as appalled. The cut seats, the stickers, the f#cking singers...

But hear me out. Sometimes in the past, when working a bit late, I've taken a Metro carriage when Metro Plus is a little too empty for my liking. You know what, the seats are hard but people are just people, going home from work or trying to get from A to B.

Now consider this anecdotal incident. I have a German colleague to also travels in by train daily. Last week I saw her and (white saffa) husband on the train into town. The train was pretty full, they were seated, and he had his face in his phone, dirty crocs up on the seat opposite him, while all around people were standing. A lady had to ask him to put his feet down, and then had to wipe the seat so as to not dirty her skirt. No he's not the type to be cutting up seats, but he was certainly being rude and dirty. Yet his wife is one of the first to complain about the poor, uneducated masses. Knowing her as I do, I'd be willing to take a bet that they see themselves as above the "masses".

"Gat-trekkers" come in all shapes and sizes. We ARE the masses. When we stop this "us and them" mentality then maybe we can actually get to fixing some *****. This is not intended as a rant at you, btw.

That is probably an exception to the rule. Most of those people aren't on the same level as middle to upper class people. It is a generalisation but just read the news daily and see what I mean. Constant disrespect for common property.
